COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team earned a spot in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championship with a 4-0 win over Notre Dame Sunday at the OSU Varsity Courts. Ohio State, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, will face No. 14 seed South Carolina at noon Friday in Athens, Ga.
Ohio State, 30-2 this season, won the doubles point and three singles matches in straight sets for the NCAA victory over the Irish. The squad has won 16 straight matches and notched its 12th shutout in the last 13 matches. Ohio State, hosting NCAA matches for the second year in a row, has won its last 33 home matches and finishes the season 17-0 at home.
Buckeye senior Sandy Niehaus, who picked up her 100th singles victory Saturday, marked the 100th doubles victory of her Ohio State career vs. the Irish to become the program’s all-time leader in doubles wins. She is the fourth Buckeye with triple digit singles wins and the first with 100 singles and doubles wins.
Ohio State won on courts one and two for the doubles point. The tandem of Niehaus and junior Anna Sanford posted the first win, topping Brooke Broda and Allison Miller, 6-1, on court two. The No. 18-ranked team of sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo and senior Miho Kowase prevailed over Mary Closs and Monica Robinson on court one, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point. Seniors Gabriella De Santis and Ferny Angeles Paz led 5-3 on court three when play was halted. Di Lorenzo and Kowase are 17-1 this spring, with wins in 12 straight matches.
No. 112-ranked Niehaus put the Buckeyes up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Closs on court five, marking her 18th win in a row. Di Lorenzo, the nation’s top-ranked player, defeated No. 101 Robinson, 6-1, 6-1, for a 3-0 Buckeye advantage. Di Lorenzo is 25-1 this spring and 35-1 overall this year, with wins in her last 20 matches. No. 91 Kowase closed out the win, topping Spence, 6-1, 6-4, on court four. Kowase stayed undefeated this spring with a 24-0 ledger.
Ohio State was ahead on the remaining three courts. Sanford led Broda 6-4, 4-3, on court two, De Santis was ahead of Miller on court three, 6-3, 5-2, and Angeles Paz was up 6-2, 5-4 on Chong on court six.
