No. 2 Buckeyes 5-0 in Big Ten Play with Sweep Over Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team improved to 20-2 and stayed undefeated in Big Ten play with a sweep over Penn State. Coach Ty Tucker is undefeated vs. the Nittany Lions who the Buckeyes have now beat in 25 straight matches.

Today’s win marks the Buckeyes’ fifth consecutive sweep and 16th on the season.

In doubles, the Buckeyes overcame a strong effort from Penn State and battled out three hard fought matches. The number one ranked doubles team in the country, Matej Vocel and Robert Cash found themselves down 3-4. After fighting from behind for most of the match, they blitzed the final games taking four of the next five for a 7-5 win. It was a similar match for Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter who traded wins going from being down 2-3 to 3-4. However, they too won four of the next five to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win.

It was a different story in the singles matches with three strong straight set wins. Vocel finished first on court two with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win. JJ Tracy also had a dominant 6-1 first set and defended a short-lived Penn State onslaught in the second set to win 6-1, 6-4 boosting the Buckeye lead to 3-0. Cannon Kingsley had an overwhelming 6-1 first set win and had to fight to seal the win in the second. He overcame a 3-4 deficit to win 7-5 and clinch the Buckeye’s fifth consecutive 4-0 sweep. Though unfinished, Jake Van Emburgh was putting on a solid performance and led 6-3, 4-3 before Kingsley clinched the win.

The Buckeyes face Michigan and Michigan State at home this weekend – Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday noon.
