COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2/3 Ohio State women’s basketball team (23-2; 10-1 Big Ten) downed Michigan (5-18; 1-11 Big Ten), 72-39, Thursday at Value City Arena. Ohio State was led by Jessica Davenport, who tallied her third-consecutive, eighth-season and 12th-career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
In the first half, Michigan made it a four-point game (14-10) off a Ta’Shia Walker jumper at 9:08. An Ashley Allen 3-pointer capped off a 10-0 run in favor of Ohio State, which sent the Buckeyes up 24-10 with just less than six minutes left until halftime.
Michigan’s BreAnne McPhilamy scored a bucket, but Tia Battle hit a jumper, followed by six-consecutive points by Kim Wilburn to stretch the Ohio State lead to 32-12 with 1:02 until halftime. Wolverine Becky Flippin drained a 3-pointer, but Battle answered with a shot in the lane to make it 34-15 at the midway mark.
The Buckeyes opened the second half by outscoring the visiting Wolverines 11-1, taking a 47-16 lead at 14:55. Ohio State stretched its lead to as many 38 points and shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the final 20 minutes.
Wilburn added a season-best 10 points to the Buckeye scoring effort. Brandie Hoskins scored nine points, while seniors Allen and Beth Howe netted seven apiece. Allen tallied a season-high four steals and Davenport blocked five shots.
Michigan was led by Tabitha Pool, who scored 10 points and grabbed six boards.
Ohio State travels to take on Iowa at 3 p.m. EST Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
