BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Eleven players scored at least a point and sophomore Tom Fritsche had three points, leading the No. 2/3 Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 7-2 victory over Bowling Green in the BGSU Ice Arena. The game was the Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both squads. The Buckeyes improve to 2-1 on the year (1-0 CCHA) and the Falcons drop to 0-3 (0-1 CCHA). Andrew Schembri and Rod Pelley each had a goal and an assist in the game, while Domenic Maiani had two helpers.

The teams will wrap up the home-and-home series with a game at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Value City Arena in Columbus. The game marks the Buckeyes’ home opener of the 2005-06 campaign.

The Buckeyes ended the first period ahead, 3-0. Sean Collins (Jr., Troy, Mich.) got the squad on the board, as his blast from the point got through traffic. Domenic Maiani (So., Shelby Township, Mich.) had the assist on the goal, which came at 3:14 with the Buckeyes on the power play. Tom Fritsche (So., Parma, Ohio) made the score 2-0 with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 11:41, as he skated in alone on BG goalie Jimmy Spratt. Rod Pelley (Sr., Kitimat, British Columbia) scored just over a minute later (12:52) just as a Falcon power play was ended. Tyson Strachan (Jr., Melfort, Saskatchewan) came out of the box and led Pelley into the zone, who scored on a backhand from in close. The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons, 9-6.

Ohio State ended the second period with a three-goal lead, 5-2. The Falcons got on the board 2:05 into the second period when James Unger scored on the power play. OSU made the score 4-1 when Jason DeSantis (So., Oxford, Mich.) scored on a 2-on-1 with Fritsche just after a Falcon power-play expired at 8:25. Maiani set up the play, as he led Fritsche into the neutral zone. Fritsche added his second goal of the game at 13:20, assisted by Matt McIlvane (So., Naperville, Ill.) and Pelley, with OSU on the power play. The Falcons cut the lead to 5-2 when Jonathan Matsumoto scored an unassisted power-play goal at 17:17. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 11-9.

Dave Barton (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) scored 5:42 into the third period. Andrew Schembri (Jr., Mississauga, Ontario) passed the puck out from behind the net to Barton right in front of the crease. The Buckeyes killed off a 5-minute major in the period, which included two minutes of 4-on-4 action when the Falcons were called for tripping. Schembri made the score 7-2 when he completed a 3-on-1, one-timing a Bryce Anderson (Jr., Waterloo, Iowa) pass at 18:18. The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the period, 11-5.

The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the game, 29-22. Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso (Sr., Roswell, Ga.) made 20 saves in the game, while Spratt had 22 stops.

Ohio State was 2-for-6 on the power play. Bowling Green was 2-for-8.

Postgame Notes
Fritsche’s two goals were his most since scoring a hat trick last season vs. Western Michigan (Jan. 29). It was his first three-point night since March 13 vs. Ferris State in game three of the CCHA tournament last season.

Maiani’s two points marked his first multiple-point game since a three-assist night at Notre Dame Jan. 15.

The game was the opener of Ohio Cup play for the year, the annual competition between the Buckeyes, Falcons and Miami won by the team with the best record against its instate opponents.

Ohio State is 16-15-2 all-time in CCHA openers and 4-1-1 in its last six.
