COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Maryland, 12-11, in overtime on Friday night at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes are now 5-6 on the year and 1-2 in Big Ten play.
“I’m incredibly proud of our men,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. “It started with our families on the field and our senior day. We have a really special group of seniors and I want to say thank you to them and thank you to their families. We had an incredible crowd; Buckeye Nation and our home games this year have been really special, and tonight was certainly no different. Tonight was an awesome game and we would’ve loved to get one more… It will sting for sure, but it’s a special weekend. We have a lot to be thankful for and we’ll get back to work and get ready to go for our next one.”
The Short Story
Ohio State stepped into the lead just 25 seconds into the game and held the advantage for more than 48 minutes of the contest. The Buckeyes went on on a five-goal scoring streak and led by as many as five goals twice on the night.
But, the Terrapins were able to chip away at the Buckeye lead and won the fourth quarter, holding Ohio State scoreless in the final frame and tying the game at 11-11 with 2:09 to play in regulation. With just 52 seconds on the clock in the overtime period, Maryland’s Braden Erksa scored to push the Terrapins past the Buckeyes, 12-11.
Cullen Brown scooped up a team-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers in the game while senior goalie Skylar Wahlund made eight saves on the day for the Buckeyes.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Ohio State was on the board early, with Ed Shean scoring just 25 seconds into the game off an assist from Jonny Cool. The Buckeyes added to their lead with a goal from Colby Smith assisted by Ari Allen at the 12:33 mark for a 2-0 advantage less than two and a half minutes into the game.
- Maryland tied up the game at 2-2 as Daniel Kelly scored a couple of goals in a span of 2:02, but Ohio State took the first quarter lead off a goal from Ed Shean with just eight seconds left on the clock.
- The Buckeyes went on to score four more to kick off the second quarter and string together five unanswered goals against the Terrapins. Kyle Borda tallied two and Trent DiCicco and Shean added their own to grow the Ohio State lead to 7-2.
- Maryland stopped the Buckeyes’ run at 4:40 in the second quarter with a goal from Zach Whittier, but Shean answered back with his third of the day at 3:23 to take back the five-goal lead.
- Shean again found the back of the net with less than 10 seconds to play in the quarter as Ohio State took a 9-5 advantage into the half.
- The second half scoring tilted in favor of Maryland as the Terrapins outscored the Buckeyes 3-2 in the third quarter and 3-0 in the fourth to tie the game for just the second time of the day with just over two minutes left in regulation. Maryland secured the win with under a minute to play in the first overtime period.

- Ohio State recognized its 2023 senior class prior to Friday night’s game. The group of 18 players includes Drew Blanchard, Kyle Borda, James Cipolla, Sam Faber, Carter Hilleary, James Hogan, Caton Johnson, Jason Knox, Connor Mitchell, Jack Myers, Garrett Nilsen, Mitchell Pehlke, Carson Rainey, Colby Smith, Jake Snyder, Skylar Wahlund, Scott White and Stephen Zupicich. In their careers at Ohio State, they have helped the team to 32 wins on the field and program record results in the classroom.
- A record-setting attendance of 2,456 fans was at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium to watch the prime-time tilt between the Buckeyes and Terrapins. The game marked the second sell-out crowd of the year for Ohio State.
- Ed Shean tied his career-high with five goals in the game against Maryland. He led the team with five points on the night. He has recorded five goals in three games this year for the Buckeyes.
- Kyle Borda recorded his sixth multi-point game of the year for Ohio State with three points on Friday night. He has recorded three points in the last four games.
- The game marked the fourth time in series history that the matchup between the Ohio State and Maryland has been decided in overtime. The Buckeyes’ 11 goals in the contest are the second-most goals the team has scored against Maryland.
