All six Buckeyes in top 30, Ohio State places three on All-Big Ten teams following the league tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Battling Michigan State throughout the final round as it had been all weekend, the No. 19 Ohio State women’s golf team finished in third place at the 2010 Big Ten Championships, just four strokes behind the 13-ranked Spartans, Sunday in Madison, Wis. The Buckeyes shot a final round of 309 while fighting through all-day rain, steady wind and cold temperatures. They totaled 1,189 (+37) during four rounds on the par 72, 6,224-yard University Ridge Golf Course.

Led by medalist Laura Gonzalez, eighth-ranked Purdue secured its third-consecutive league title. The Boilermakers totaled 6-over 1,158 to secure their slot atop the leaderboard by a 27-stroke margin. The race for second was a close one, but Michigan State was able to pull in front of the Buckeyes in the final round with a total of 1,185.

Following the tournament, the conference handed out its season honors with three Buckeyes picking up awards. Freshman Rachel Rohanna was selected to the First Team All-Big Ten, while senior Emma Jandel and junior In Hong Lim were named to the second team. It was second All-Big Ten honor for the upperclassmen with Jandel earning a second-team nod in 2008 and Lim a first-team laurel in 2009.

“Those three have done a good job and have been pretty consistent all year,” Therese Hession, 19-year Ohio State head coach, said. “It’s nice they were honored by the conference, although they all said they would trade in their individual honors for a team championship. But I’m happy they earned their awards.”

The three awards were the cherry on top of a tournament in which all Buckeyes in the 6-count-4 event finished in the top 30. Ohio State’s top finishers were Lim and sophomore Vicky Villanueva. The duo each totaled 229 to tie for 11th with final rounds of 76.

One stroke back was freshman Susana Benavides who tied for 14th at 300. Benavides struggled on the front nine, but settled down after making the turn to make par on her last seven holes.

Rohanna also concluded her first Big Ten championships in the top 20. Tied for 16th at 301, she fired a round of 78 but was even on the back nine after concluding the tournament with a birdie on her final hole.

Also competing for the Buckeyes were Jandel and freshman Amy Meier. Jandel shot a round of 86 to tie for 26th at 305, while Meier finished tied for 30th at 307 after a final round of 79.

Up next, the Buckeyes await the announcement of the NCAA tournament field Monday. Ohio State is in the hunt for its 16th-consecutive NCAA regional appearance.
