COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a Big Ten match, the No. 19-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team lost to Nebraska, 4-3, Wednesday in the Varsity Tennis Center. Ohio State is 5-4 on the season (1-1 B1G), while the Cornhuskers improve to 12-2 (1-0 B1G).

“I thought Nebraska played with a lot of confidence,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “We need to get tougher. We have had a tough week being on the road and then coming back for a match today. Still, there is a lot of the season left and I think if we put our minds to it, we can be successful. We are going to have to put a lot of work in but we will be willing to do that.”

Ohio State will return to action Tuesday with two home matches in the Varsity Tennis Center. The squad will host Dayton at noon and Bowling Green at 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Both singles and doubles came down to a final court.

In doubles, the Buckeye pair of freshman Emma DeCoste and redshirt sophomore Danielle Wolf was the first off the court after falling to Vasanti Shinde and Katerina Matysova, 6-1, on court three. On court one, the Buckeyes answered when the No. 32-ranked tandem of senior Anna Sanford and redshirt freshman Shiori Fukuda topped the Huskers’ pair of Paula Del Cueto Castillo and Brianna Lashway, 6-2. The doubles point was decided on court two, where the Buckeye tandem of senior Olivia Sneed and freshman Mary Beth Hurley went to a tiebreak against Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad. During the tiebreak each pair had match points, with the Huskers finally serving out the win, 10-8, to put Nebraska up 1-0.

In singles, Sanford dropped just two games in each set on court one vs. Lashway to tie the match at one. The Huskers pushed ahead with a 6-3, 6-3 win by Matysova over Wolf.

Buckeye freshmen posted the next two wins for a 3-2 Ohio State lead. On court four DeCoste won over Del Cueto Castillo, 6-4, 6-3, followed by a 6-3, 7-5 win by Hurley over Haakenstad on court six.

The Huskers won the final two matches for the team victory. On court three against Shinde, Sneed dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2) and then fell in the second set, 6-4. On court two, Nebraska’s Reifeis won in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-3, Fukuda claimed the second in a tiebreaker to force a third set.
