In Hong Lim leads Ohio State heading into round three

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After 36 holes of play Friday, the 19th-ranked Ohio State women’s golf team is in third place and only a shot away from second at the 2010 Big Ten Championships being held in Madison, Wis. Competing on the par 72, 6,224-yard University Ridge Golf Course, the Buckeyes fired a second round score of 293 – a one stroke improvement from their morning round – for a total of 11-over 587 with two more rounds left to play.

Battling sometimes rainy conditions, No. 12 Michigan State slipped past Ohio State in the final holes to move into second place. Eighth-ranked Purdue sits atop the leaderboard at 571. Firing a 7-under 65 in round two, Ashley Bauer of Michigan is the top individual at 139.

Every Buckeye in the 6-count-4 tournament stands in the top 21, with three in the top 15.

In Hong Lim opened strong in the morning with a round of even-par 72 and followed with a 74 in the afternoon. The junior from Melbourne, Australia, leads the Buckeyes in the standings with a tie for eighth at 146. Lim made par on 28 of 36 holes played in the opening day, balancing two birdies and two bogeys in round one and a birdie to three bogeys in round two.

An Ohio State pair is tied for 13th at 147 in senior captain Emma Jandel and sophomore Vicky Villanueva. Jandel, from Dayton, Ohio, was just 1-over in the first round, but in round two hiccupped on two of her last three holes with double-bogey, bogey before closing her day with a birdie to come back to 2-over.

After a rocky first round of 76, Villanueva had a complete turnaround in the afternoon. The Chacabuco, Argentina, product and 2009 Big Ten Freshman of the Year improved by five strokes in round two with a 1-under 71 for the low Ohio State score on the day. Villanueva was 2-under after making the turn, but carded a bogey on hole No. 13.

The trio of Buckeye freshmen competed well while gaining experience in their first postseason college golf event.

Susana Benavides is tied for 18th after rounds of 75-74. The native of Cochabamba, Bolivia, was full-steam ahead in her first 13 holes of the second round, tallying five birdies with just one bogey in that span. Benavides then hit a rough patch with two bogeys and two double-bogeys to close the round.

Rachel Rohanna, from Waynesburg, Pa., and Amy Meier, from Rochester Hills, Mich., are tied for 21st at 150 after shooting 74-76 and 75-75, respectively.
