COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team started strong at the Ohio Winter Invite at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion with impressive performances from each of the ladies competing on Saturday.

“I thought it was a pretty solid performance overall,” Ohio State assistant coach Stefanie Williams said. “We did a nice job of staying on task against great opponents in Penn State and Purdue.”

Freshman Emily King opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly, improving on her second-place finish from prelims. Senior Morgan Menzie also swam to a victory in the 100 backstroke.

“It was great that the girls who are competing in the Big Ten Championship next week came out to show support for their teammates competing today,” said Williams. “It really created a fun environment for the girls.”

Also competing for the Scarlet and Gray were freshman Lisa Spurling, who had her best time as a Buckeye in prelims, and senior Shelby Gordon. Both Buckeyes battled in the 100 freestyle.

Ohio State swimmers will return for the second day of action at the Invite tomorrow. Prelims start at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 5 p.m.
