FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Notre Dame defeated the No. 18-ranked Ohio State men’s soccer team, 2-0, in the National Soccer Festival Saturday night at the Hefner Sports Complex in the final exhibition match for the Buckeyes. They end the preseason portion of the schedule with a 2-1 record.
The Irish struck early, scoring in the sixth minute off an unassisted tally by Jeb Provsky. They would add to it midway the second half when Dillon Powers assisted on Steven Perry’s goal late in the 63rd minute.
The Buckeyes had plenty of scoring opportunities, posting a 19-9 shot advantage for the match and an 8-3 margin in corner kicks. Konrad Warzycha led the offensive charge with five shots, while Chris Hegngi and Sam Scales added three apiece.
Notre Dame’s Will Walsh made seven stops in goal, while OSU keepers Matt Lampson and Ryan Dalton combined for three. Dalton came in early in the 68th minute and promptly stopped a pair of Irish shots to keep the score at 2-0.
Ohio State then opens the regular season with the annual Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic Sept. 3 and 5 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Penn State, College of Charleston and Buffalo round out the tournament field, which opens play at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 with the Nittany Lions taking on Buffalo.
