No. 18 Ohio State Earns 195.525 in Dual vs. No. 22 Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team fell to No. 22 Iowa, 196.175-195.525, Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena.

“I thought both teams performed well today but sometimes you just get beat,” Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. “Hopefully it’ll make the team more hungry when we get back to practice Monday. We have a big opportunity next weekend at Minnesota to get a good road score which would be huge for us.”

Ohio State opened the meet on vault, posting a 48.700. Jamie Stone and Jaine VanPutten led the way for the Buckeyes, each tallying a 9.775, to tie for second.

The Buckeyes moved to uneven bars in the second rotation, earning a 48.900. Alexis Mattern posted a career-high 9.850 to tie for second while Olivia Aepli also tied her career high, tallying a 9.825.

Through two rotations, the Buckeyes trailed Iowa, 97.750-97.600.

In the third rotation, Ohio State posted a season-best 49.050 on balance beam. Kaitlyn Hofland posted a season-high 9.900 to tie for second while Stefanie Merkle tied her career-high 9.875.

The Buckeyes then concluded the meet with a 48.875 on floor exercise in the final rotation. Mattern paced the Buckeyes with a 9.825 on the event.

Mattern finished second in the all-around with a 39.050.

The Buckeyes travel to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota at 5 p.m. ET Saturday.
