COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18 Ohio State women’s tennis team (3-0, 0-0 B1G) came from behind to beat No. 19 Pepperdine, 4-3, in the first round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. The Buckeyes will take on host and No. 22-ranked TCU at 5 p.m. ET Saturday with a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on the line. Live updates from the match can be followed HERE.

Against the Waves, the Buckeyes lost the doubles point but picked up four singles wins, including three in three sets, for the victory. Each time Pepperdine went ahead by one, the Buckeyes answered to tie the match. Junior Ferny Angeles Paz deadlocked the match at three, rallying after losing the first set. With the match on the line, sophomore Olivia Sneed posted the only straight set victory of the day to clinch the team win. Junior Miho Kowase and sophomore Anna Sanford also posted three-set victories in singles for Ohio State.

“This was just a really good college tennis match that came down to the wire,” Melissa Schaub, head coach of the Buckeyes, said. “Pepperdine is a very good team and we are happy to come away with the win. It was a total team fight and for Olivia to step up at the end with the match on the line was really big.”

Pepperdine captured the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The No. 18-ranked tandem of Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox topped the Buckeyes’ No. 6-ranked team of Sanford and Kowase, 6-1, on court one. On court two, No. 8-ranked Luisa Stefani and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai defeated Buckeye juniors Gabriella De Santis and Angeles Paz, 6-3. The match on court three was suspended with No. 45-ranked Laura Gulbe and Dzina Milovanovic ahead of Sneed and Buckeye freshman Francesca Di Lorenzo, 5-4.

Ohio State tied the match at one with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win by Sanford over Cutura on court three. The Waves responded on court one, as No. 14 Stefani topped No. 2-ranked Di Lorenzo, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Di Lorenzo and Stefani have been doubles partners and made a run to the US Open Juniors doubles semifinals in the fall.

The Buckeyes answered right away, as Kowase notched a commanding win in the third set over No. 96 Milovanovic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The Waves again went ahead when No. 102 Gulbe defeated De Santis, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. On court five, Angeles Paz tied the match, rallying for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Runglerdkriangkrai.

The match came down to court six, where Sneed won the only straight set singles match of the day, downing Maddox, 7-5, 6-2.
