FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 17/18 Ohio State completed the sweep of its meetings with CSUN this season after a 4-2 victory on Saturday night at the Easton Invitational. The Buckeyes stand at 19-3 overall while the Matadors fall to 12-21.
Lilli Piper delivered a two-run home run, her 12th of the season. Emily Clark roped a two-RBI double to break the stalemate and push the Buckeyes to a win.
IN A NUTSHELL
Niki Carver started the third with a leadoff single down the left field line. Facing two outs and down 0-2 in the count, Lilli Piper drilled the ball for a two-run homer.
The Matadors responded in the home frame as an RBI single by Megan Stevens sliced the deficit in half, 2-1. CSUN tied the game in the fourth on a solo homer from Haileigh Gonzalez.
Emily Clark handed the lead back to the Buckeyes in the top of the fifth. Bailee Sturgeon singled through the left side and Piper followed with a single to left center. With two outs, Clark nailed a two-RBI double to the centerfield wall to put OSU ahead 4-2.
RHP Morgan Ray stepped into the circle in the bottom of the fifth and worked her way out of a bases loaded jam on back-to-back strikeouts.
IN THE CIRCLE
Shelby McCombs (8-1) seized the win behind three runs on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Ray pitched three innings of relief for two hits and four strikeouts.
The Buckeyes conclude their Spring Break excursion against two-time defending national champion No. 5 Oklahoma tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET.
