ASHLAND, Ohio– The Ohio State wrestling Buckeyes extended their current winning streak to nine-consecutive duals as they recorded an almost perfect day on the mats Sunday at the Wendy’s Classic at Kates Gymnasium at Ashland University. The Buckeyes were victorious in 29 of the 30 matches they wrestled and brought their record to 9-3 overall. OSU defeated Marquette, 45-3, Binghamton, 47-0, and host Ashland, 43-0. The shut out of Ashland made the duals more memorable for OSU as it avenged a 19-16 defeat a year ago.

“The victory (over Ashland) was important for the team and they were very emotional,” Russ Hellickson, OSU head coach, said. “The guys wanted to come back here and win after the loss last year. They were very intense and showed great sportsmanship today.”

Josh Janson (Jr., Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Moeller), John Clark (Fr., Canton, N.Y./Canton) and Nick Preston (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/DeSales) led the Buckeyes in victory with two wins by pinfall each. Preston scored a pinfall victory in the 197 match against Binghamton at 0:16 in the match. The time of victory could be one of the quickest in OSU history.

In the Ashland dual, Clark and Tommy Rowlands (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) led the team to victory with a win by pinfall at 165 pounds and a technical fall in the heavyweight match, respectively. Janson also scored well for OSU when he notched a 13-4 major decision victory at 157.

In the opening dual of the classic, the Buckeyes won three matches by forfeit and two by pinfall against Marquette wrestlers. Richie Bordner (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and Kore Sharpley (Sr., Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) added a technical fall and major decision in the victory. The most dominating all-around team performance came in the second dual of the day against Binghamton. Robert Sessley (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Beechcroft), Janson, Blake Kaplan (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), Anton Talamantes (So., Ft. Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) and Preston secured their victories by pinfall as OSU swept the Bearcats.

OSU returns to action at noon Sunday, Jan. 21, at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes will play host to their final non-conference opponent in No. 20 North Carolina before taking on Purdue in OSU’s Big Ten opener.
