COLUMBUS, Ohio – After losing the five previous meetings with Nittany Lions, the 16th-ranked Ohio State (9-4 overall, 2-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team put a 15-12 victory into the record book over 15th-ranked Penn State (6-9, 3-2). OSU’s Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario) and Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) recorded a team-high four goals each for the Buckeyes with Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) adding three each. Lauren Cochran’s (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) lone goal rounded out the scoring for Ohio State. Penn State’s Katie Jeschke (So., Ellicott City, Md.) scored a game-high five goals for the Nittany Lions in the loss. Colleen O’Hara (Jr., Ardmore, Pa.) added three goals with Katie Hartman (So., Annapolis, Md.) two for PSU. Molly Ford (Sr., Trenton, N.J.) and Brooke Bailey (Sr., Wallingford, Pa.) added single goals for the Nittany Lions.
Ohio State opened the first half with four goals in the first six minutes. Mirick opened the scoring at 1:10 followed by a Wilson goal at 4:38. The pattern repeated with Mirick scoring at 6:02 and Wilson following at 6:18 with an assist to Bounds. Penn State made it 4-1 with a Bailey goal at 10:18, assisted by Ford. The Buckeyes then scored five consecutive goals to take a 9-1 lead. Bounds started the run at 12:55. Oliver scored three consecutive goals at 13:07, 14:07 and 17:35, the last assisted by Wilson. Wilson’s third goal at 20:11, assisted by Bounds, made it 9-1. Penn State made it 9-2 at 22:25 with a Hartman goal. Jeschke made it 9-3 at 25:45. Hartman’s second goal made it 9-4 at 26:32. The Buckeyes closed out the scoring in the first half with a Lauren Cochran goal at 26:56, assisted by Bounds to take a 10-4 lead. Penn State scored twice to open the second half and cut the Buckeye lead to 10-6. O’Hara’s goal at 31:15, assisted by Jamie Donahue (So., Oreland, Pa.) followed by Jeschke’s second goal at 36:18 to cut the OSU lead to four. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to six (12-6) with Mirick’s third goal at 36:29 and Oliver’s fourth goal at 41:59. Penn State responded with a Ford goal at 43:02 and Jeschke’s third goal at 48:49 to cut the Buckeye lead to four at 12-8. Bounds scored her second goal at 49:18 to make it 13-8. The Nittany Lions responded with a Jeschke goal, her fourth, at 50:35 on an assist by Emily Chambers (Fr., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) making the score 13-9. Ohio State, with a goal by Wilson, assisted by Mirick, at 51:41 made it 14-9. Bounds completed the scoring for Ohio State with her third goal at 53:11 giving OSU a 15-9 lead. Penn State responded with three goals: Jeschke’s fifth at 56:18, O’Hara’s second at 58:23 and O’Hara’s third at 58:40 to close to 15-12, the final score.
OSU’s goalkeeper Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) had nine saves in the game while giving up 12 goals. Penn State’s Lee Tortorelli (Fr., Havertown, Pa.) had 12 saves and gave up 15 goals.
Ohio State will close out the home season with a 1 p.m., Sunday, April 28 game against Davidson (5-11, 0-5). Ohio University defeated Davidson, 10-3, Friday night.
