COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 16 Ohio State men’s tennis team upset No. 8 Vanderbilt, 4-3, Friday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-1 this season and the Commodores, 5-3, suffer their third-consecutive loss. The 4-3 decision marked the first Ohio State Top 10 victory for head coach Ty Tucker.

The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point at the No. 3 position. Jeremy Wurtzman (Sr., Rochester, N.Y./Brickhouse Academy/Florida) and Joey Atas (Fr., Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) downed Vanderbilt’s Scott Brown and Chad Harris, 8-6, on court No. 1. Wurtzman and Atas are undefeated with four wins in duals this season. The sophomore duo of Scott Green (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (So., Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), ranked No. 38 in the country, fell short to Zach Dailey and Greg Sossamon in a 9-8 (7-4) tie break match. The doubles point came down to court No. 3. The OSU tandem of Brenton Contini (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Dennis Mertens (So., Braaschaat, Belgium/Koninkiljk) defeated Matthew Lockin and Lewis Smith, 9-8 (7-4), to secure the point for the Buckeyes. Contini and Mertens post a 2-0 record in duals this season.

In singles action, Atas remained undefeated in duals with seven wins, including five victories playing the No. 2 position for the Buckeyes. He also is the first Ohio State player in two years to defeat Vanderbilt’s Lockin, who is ranked No. 27 in the nation. Atas defeated Lockin, 6-1, 6-3, and put the second point on the board for the Buckeyes.

Wurtzman, the No. 1 player in the country, defeated No. 55 Chad Harris, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. Wurtzman improves to 6-1 in 2004 dual play.

Vanderbilt narrowed the Ohio State lead, 3-2, after the Commodores knocked off the Buckeyes on the Nos. 3 and 4 courts. Chris Klingemann (Fr., Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech) dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to No. 45 Dailey and Devin Mullings (Fr., Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prep) fell in three sets to No. 46 Brown, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Sophomore Mertens clinched the upset after he closed out a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Smith. Mertens is undefeated at the No. 5 spot with six wins. On court six, Wilson and Vanderbilt’s Sossamon decided to play a third set tiebreaker for the match point. Wilson fell, 10-5.

Next up, Ohio State plays host to Southeastern Conference foe No. 18 Alabama at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. The Buckeyes will face their fourth-consecutive Top 25 opponent.
