Starting Five

  • The Ohio State men’s basketball team traveled to Spain for 11 days over the summer. The Buckeyes played a total of three games, one in each stop during the trip, which began Aug. 1 with a flight to Madrid. Three days were spent in Madrid (W, 93-61 vs. Madrid Generals), Valencia (W, 95-63 vs. Valencia All-Stars) and Barcelona (W, 68-66 vs. Catalan All-Stars) before the team returned to Columbus Aug. 11. The team also experienced several cultural tours, team meals and excursions.
  • Ohio State improved to 2-0 in the Gavitt Games with a 69-60 win at Creighton Nov. 15. Ohio State defeated Providence in Columbus in its first appearance in the event in 2016. The Buckeyes earned four wins in the Buckeye Classic to claim the event title. Ohio State defeated Purdue Fort Wayne, South Carolina State, Samford and Cleveland State.
  • Ohio State is ranked No. 16 in the most recent Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. The Buckeyes are 20-9 all-time when ranked in the No. 16 position and are 505-149 when ranked among the Top 25 in the AP poll. The Buckeyes were 10-5 as a ranked team in 2017-18. Ohio State was ranked No. 17 in the final game of the season vs. No. 6 Gonzaga a year ago in the NCAA Tournament (L, 90-84).
  • Ohio State will appear on four major television networks again in 2018-19. This season marks the second year in which FOX will televise Big Ten Conference games. The Buckeyes, who have traditionally appeared on CBS, the Big Ten Network and the ESPN family of networks, will appear on FOX and/or FS1 four times this season. The first appearance was at home Nov. 23 vs. Cleveland State at historic St. John Arena in the 2018 Buckeye Classic.
  • Ohio State will play 16 games against teams among the Associated Press Top 25 or receiving votes for Top 25 consideration. Nine of those games will be played away from Value City Arena. The Buckeyes face No. 11 Michigan State (home/away), No. 7 Michigan (away), No. 19 Purdue (home/away), No. 22 Wisconsin (home), No. 24 Maryland (home/away) and No. 14 Iowa (home/away). Teams receiving votes are Syracuse (home), Indiana (road), Nebraska (road), Minnesota (home), Creighton (away) and UCLA (neutral).

C.J. Jackson is averaging 13.6 points a game and has the Buckeyes off to a 6-1 start … he reached 100 career 3-pointers made with three makes vs. Cleveland State … for his Ohio State career he is (103-289/.356) from distance … has scored 702 career points after a 19-point effort vs. Syracuse and is on pace to become Ohio State’s next 1,000-point scorer … Duane Washington Jr. is 13-of-29 from 3-point range (.448) in seven appearances … Kyle Young is 19-for-28 shooting this season (.679), Jaedon LeDee is 9-for-11 from the field in six appearances … Ohio State ranks 17th in field goal percentage defense (.370) and 21st in scoring defense (60.3 ppg) … Keyshawn Woods ranks eighth nationally with a 5.5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Noting the Syracuse Game

  • Ohio State falls to 5-2 against Syracuse all-time and 2-1 against the Orange in Columbus.
  • In the team’s 17th appearance in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Ohio State is now 6-11 after meeting Syracuse for the first time in the event.
  • The contest marked the first time the two teams have met since the 2012 NCAA East Regional.
  • Ohio State is now 20-9 when ranked No. 16 in the Associated Press Poll. With the loss, the team is 505-149 when ranked in the Top 25.
  • The Buckeyes fall to 67-50 against teams that currently make up the Atlantic Coast Conference.
  • The game versus Syracuse is the first game that Chris Holtmann has coached against the Orange.
  • Kyle Young recorded a career-high 12 points in the contest. This is the second time this season Young has scored in double figures. Young is three points shy of 100 for his career.
  • The sophomore also recorded a career-high two steals in the contest.
  • Young finished with four rebounds and two blocks.
  • C.J. Jackson scored 19 points to lead the Buckeye scoring effort. The game was his fourth scoring in double figures this season.
  • Jackson hit his 700th career point. He now has 702 total points in his career.
  • The contest versus Syracuse marked Keyshawn Woods’ 100th career game.
  • With six points in the contest, Woods is seven made field goals shy of 400 for his career.
  • Woods finished with three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
  • Kaleb Wesson recorded his 200th career rebound with eight total boards in the contest. He now has 206 career boards. Wesson added 13 points, scoring in double figures for the fifth time this season. He added one steal and one block.

Scouting The Minnesota Golden Gophers
Minnesota enters the game with the Buckeyes sporting a record of 5-1 (as of 11/27/18) following a loss at Boston College in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Nov. 26. That game followed five consecutive wins to open the season. Minnesota earned home wins over Omaha and Utah before neutral-site victories against Texas A&M, Santa Clara and Washington. Jordan Murphy averages a double-double for the Gophers with 14.3 points and 12.2 rebounds. Amir Coffey (14.0 ppg.) and Gabe Kalscheur (13.5 ppg.) also contribute double figures offensively.

The Ohio State vs. Minnesota Series
Ohio State leads the overall series vs. Minnesota 86-57 and owns a 52-18 advantage in Columbus. The Buckeyes do not travel to Minnesota this year to face the Gophers in Minneapolis, where Ohio State is 31-39 all-time. When the teams battle on neutral courts, as the squads did last year at Madison Square Garden in New York, Ohio State owns a 3-0 record. When Ohio State carries a Top 25 Associated Press ranking into the game vs. the Gophers, the Buckeyes own a 29-4 record. Ohio State is 10-1 vs. Minnesota at Value City Arena. Senior C.J. Jackson and junior Andre Wesson have faced the Golden Gophers three times during their careers as Buckeyes. Jackson averages 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds. Wesson adds just under four points a game in the series. Sophomore Kaleb Wesson scored 15 points in the lone meeting a year ago while also grabbing eight boards.

Ohio State vs. The Big Ten
The Buckeyes own an overall record of 817-717 against current league members. Chris Holtmann is new to the Big Ten but no stranger to Big Ten competition. He faced six league opponents during his six years as a head coach prior to taking over for the Buckeyes this year. He entered his first year of Big Ten competition with a 4-5 record vs. conference foes. He is 19-9 vs. conference opponents in seven years as a head coach.
