Noting the Syracuse Game
Scouting The Minnesota Golden Gophers
Minnesota enters the game with the Buckeyes sporting a record of 5-1 (as of 11/27/18) following a loss at Boston College in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Nov. 26. That game followed five consecutive wins to open the season. Minnesota earned home wins over Omaha and Utah before neutral-site victories against Texas A&M, Santa Clara and Washington. Jordan Murphy averages a double-double for the Gophers with 14.3 points and 12.2 rebounds. Amir Coffey (14.0 ppg.) and Gabe Kalscheur (13.5 ppg.) also contribute double figures offensively.
The Ohio State vs. Minnesota Series
Ohio State leads the overall series vs. Minnesota 86-57 and owns a 52-18 advantage in Columbus. The Buckeyes do not travel to Minnesota this year to face the Gophers in Minneapolis, where Ohio State is 31-39 all-time. When the teams battle on neutral courts, as the squads did last year at Madison Square Garden in New York, Ohio State owns a 3-0 record. When Ohio State carries a Top 25 Associated Press ranking into the game vs. the Gophers, the Buckeyes own a 29-4 record. Ohio State is 10-1 vs. Minnesota at Value City Arena. Senior C.J. Jackson and junior Andre Wesson have faced the Golden Gophers three times during their careers as Buckeyes. Jackson averages 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds. Wesson adds just under four points a game in the series. Sophomore Kaleb Wesson scored 15 points in the lone meeting a year ago while also grabbing eight boards.
Ohio State vs. The Big Ten
The Buckeyes own an overall record of 817-717 against current league members. Chris Holtmann is new to the Big Ten but no stranger to Big Ten competition. He faced six league opponents during his six years as a head coach prior to taking over for the Buckeyes this year. He entered his first year of Big Ten competition with a 4-5 record vs. conference foes. He is 19-9 vs. conference opponents in seven years as a head coach.
