COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 16 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 11 Penn State, 17-9, in University Park, Pa. on Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes (5-5, 1-1 B1G) drop their first conference road game of the season while the Nittany Lions (6-3, 1-1 B1G) earn thier first league win of the year.
The Short Story
Ohio State scored the first goal of the game to take an early lead, but it was the only scoring advantage it would hold in the game. The Buckeyes got within one goal of the Nittany Lions five times but were never able to tie the game after Penn State took the lead at 3:52 in the first quarter.
Leading the team in points in the contest were Kyle Borda, Matt Caputo and Jack Myers with three. Borda scored a team-high three goals while Caputo and Myers each scored twice and added an assist.
Marcus Hudgins led the team with three caused turnovers as Ohio State caused a season-high ten turnovers on the day.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Kyle Borda scored his first goal of the day at 13:18 to give Ohio State its lone lead of the game.
- Penn State tallied three in a row before Matt Caputo found the back of the net at 1:21 to bring the score to 3-2.
- The Nittany Lions scored with 10 seconds on the clock to end the first quarter up, 4-2.
- Ohio State was first to strike in the second quarter, with Dillon Magee scoring an unassisted goal at 14:39 in the first possession of the frame.
- Penn State scored two more to strengthen its lead, but Jack Myers and Mitchell Pehlke scored at 12:16 and 11:32, respectively, to bring the Buckeyes back within of the Nittany Lions with the score at 6-5.
- Penn State scored again at 8:11, but Caputo added his second of the day at 5:23 to again bring Ohio State just a goal shy of catching the Nittany Lions.
- With a goal at 4:12 in the second quarter, Penn State would go on an eight goal scoring streak, closing the quarter with three goals and starting the second half with five.
- Ohio State snapped the Penn State run and scored its first goal in nearly 18 minutes with a tally from Jack Myers with 2:45 to play in the third quarter to make the game 15-7 in favor of Penn State.
- Kyle Borda added two more goals, the first at 1:30 in the third and the second at 2:29 in the fourth, to bring Ohio State to nine goals on the day. Penn State also added a goal in the final minutes of the third and fourth quarters to make the final score 17-9.
Game Notes
- Kyle Borda scored his third hat trick of the year with three goals for Ohio State in the game. He has now recorded six multi-goal games on the year and extends his point and goal streak to four games.
- Freshman Matt Caputo started his second consecutive game for the Buckeyes and his third of his career. With three points on the day, he ties his career high. The Westbury, N.Y. native grabbed a career-best two ground balls in the game. Scoring one of his goals on the extra man opportunity, Caputo now ties for the team lead with four man-up goals on the year.
- Ed Shean has recorded at least a point in every game this season, adding an assist in today’s matchup against Penn State.
- The Buckeyes pressured Penn State to commit 19 turnovers on Sunday. The mark is the Nittany Lions’ second most in a game this season and the most by a Buckeye opponent on the year.
- Sunday’s game marked the team’s fifth matchup of the year against a higher ranked opponent. Ohio State has now played seven ranked teams in 10 games and is slated to close the regular season against at least two more ranked foes.
