COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State women’s gymnastics team travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for the 2011 Big Ten Championships at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The meet will be televised live on Big Ten Network.
The Buckeyes come into the meet with a team RQS of 195.800 which is fourth in the Big Ten, just behind Iowa (195.820) and slightly ahead of Illinois (195.790).
LAST TIME OUT
On Senior Day, then-No. 14 Ohio State tied its season-high team total of 196.100 to place first in a tri-meet vs. Missouri and Pittsburgh March 12 in St. John Arena. Missouri placed second with a 193.325, while Pittsburgh finished third with a 191.625 team total.
Sarah Miller posted a career-high 9.950 on beam to finish first and a 9.900 on floor exercise to tie for first for the Buckeyes.
BUCKEYES IN THE RANKINGS
Ohio State enters the week ranked 15th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten with an RQS of 195.800. The Buckeyes rank in the Top 25 in vault (t-13th, 49.090), beam (9th, 49.015) and floor exercise (15th, 49.065).
Sarah Miller sits tied for fifth nationally with a beam RQS of 9.890 and is tied for 20th with a floor RQS of 9.870. Colleen Dean is 23rd nationally with an all-around RQS of 39.120.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Buckeyes will look to have a strong performance at the Big Ten Championships after winning five previous Big Ten titles each season from 1983-87, qualifying for the NCAA Championships 1983-85-86-87-89-90.
SIXTH FOW FOR SARAH MILLER
Sarah Miller earned her sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, the conference office announced March 14. The award marks the eighth for a Buckeye this season. Miller set a career-high 9.950 on beam to take first on the event as then-No. 14 Ohio State tied a team season-high 196.100 March 12 to win a tri-meet with Missouri and Pittsburgh. She also tied for first with a 9.900 on floor exercise.
MILLER EARNS FIFTH FOW
Sarah Miller earned her fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, the conference office announced Feb. 28. The award marks the seventh for a Buckeye this season. Miller set a career-high 9.925 on beam to tie for first on the event as No. 17 Ohio State set a team season-high 195.900 Feb. 26 at Penn State. She also finished fourth on vault (9.800) and floor exercise (9.875).
MILLER PICKS UP FOURTH FOW
Sarah Miller was named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Feb. 21. It is the fourth Freshman of the Week award for the Collegeville, Pa., native and the sixth for a Buckeye this season. After tying for first with a 9.800 on vault and second with a 9.750 on beam in a win Feb. 18 against Michigan State, Miller tied her career high with a 9.925 on floor while the Buckeyes set a team season-high 195.825 in a win over Kentucky Feb. 20.
SHAFFER PICKS UP SECOND FOW
Melanie Shaffer was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Feb. 14. It is the second Freshman of the Week award for the Pittsburgh, Pa., native and the fifth for a Buckeye this season. Shaffer took first in the all-around with a career-high 39.325 while setting career highs to take first on vault (9.900) and floor exercise (9.875) as the No. 15 Buckeyes set a team season best in a 195.600-195.100 win Feb. 12 against West Virginia.
MILLER EARNS THIRD BIG TEN FOW
Sarah Miller earned her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award of the season, the conference office announced Feb. 7. A Buckeye has won the award each of the last three weeks and four of the five weeks this season. Miller posted three Top 3 finishes as the Buckeyes set a team season high score of 195.575 Feb. 4 at Denver. She recorded a career-high 9.900 on the balance beam to take first place while tying for third on floor exercise (9.800) and vault (9.875) in the Buckeyes’ narrow loss to the Pioneers.
SHAFFER NAMED TOP FRESHMAN
Melanie Shaffer was named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week Jan. 31 after setting career highs on beam and floor while tying her career best on vault en route to a pair of event wins as the Buckeyes posted a season-high team score of 195.450 against Bowling Green and Western Michigan.
Shaffer won vault with a score of 9.825, tying her career-best set Jan. 22 against Illinois, and floor with a career-high 9.850. The freshman also set her career high on beam with a 9.800 to tie for third.
MILLER AGAIN NAMED TOP ROOKIE
Sarah Miller was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time in three weeks, the conference office announced Jan. 24.
Miller placed first on balance beam and floor exercise in the Buckeyes’ tie against Illinois Jan. 22. The freshman tied her career-high with a 9.875 on beam and set a career best with a 9.925 on floor. Miller also tied for third with a 9.825 on vault.
MILLER EARNS BIG TEN AWARD
Sarah Miller earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after helping the Buckeyes upset No. 23 Minnesota, the conference office announced Jan. 10. The award marked the first such honor for an Ohio State gymnast.
Miller, from Collegeville, Pa., took the event title on beam with a score of 9.875 while tying for second on vault at 9.800 and third on floor exercise at 9.750. The 9.875 beam score ranked third nationally over the first week of competition.
Ohio State heads to NCAA Regionals April 1-2 at a site to be determined.
