COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No.15 Ohio State men’s volleyball team topped Lees-McRae, 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-12), Friday night in St. John Arena. The squad improved to 1-3 on the season with the win.
Redshirt junior Andrew Lutz led the match with season-high 11 kills and added two service aces. Junior Michael Henchy finished with nine kills, two service aces and seven digs, while redshirt freshman Driss Guessous totaled five kills and a career-best five blocks (2s, 3a).
Brady Markle led the Bobcats (0-1) with eight kills and added seven digs. Matt Harpenau had six kills and libero Efrain Negron had a match-high nine digs.
Ohio State opened set one on a 4-1 run and pushed ahead 7-3. A kill by Neary triggered a 10-1 Buckeye run and gave the home squad a quick 17-5 advantage. A kill from Henchy set the score 23-10 and after a two-point Bobcat rally, back-to-back kills from Lutz sealed a 25-12 win.
A pair of kills by Henchy highlighted a 5-1 Buckeye run to kick off set two. Ohio State held on to its slim margin until a 3-0 run forced a Bobcat timeout at 16-10. Ohio State closed out the match on an 8-1 run to win 25-12.
The Buckeyes took a 7-1 lead to start the third set and another 7-1 run moved Ohio State to a 14-3 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Henchy and a Lutz service ace highlighted a four-point Buckeye run to set the score 22-11 and a kill from Lutz gave Ohio State the match with a 25-14 victory.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena Saturday night for a 7 p.m. ET match against George Mason. Admission is free. Fans are encouraged to give themselves some time to get to the match because of a concert at the Schottenstein Center.
