COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State women’s gymnastics team hosts West Virginia in a double dual with the Buckeye men’s team at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. John Arena. It will be Fan Appreciation Day with Valentine’s Day gifts to the first 500 fans and a post-meet team autograph session. Fans also will be able to register to win an iPad.
The Buckeyes come into the meet with an average team score of 194.830 while the Mountaineers average 193.871 points.
LAST TIME OUT
The Buckeyes recorded a season high for the third-consecutive week but dropped a 196.375-195.575 decision Feb. 4 at Denver.
Ohio State posted season highs on vault (49.275) and balance beam (49.150). Sarah Miller took first on beam with a career-high 9.900 and set her career high with a 9.875 on vault. Melanie Shaffer also set career highs on beam and vault with scores of 9.825 and 9.875, respectively.
BUCKEYES IN THE RANKINGS
Ohio State enters the week ranked 15th nationally and second in the Big Ten with an average team score of 194.830. The Buckeyes rank in the Top 25 in vault (t-15th, 48.865), beam (9th, 48.735) and floor (21st, 48.660).
Nicole Krauter is tied for 28th nationally with an average beam score of 9.805.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Led by 37th-year head coach Linda Burdette-Good, West Virginia enters the weekend with an average team score of 193.871. The Mountaineers are 2-2 in dual meets this season with wins over Missouri and Michigan State. Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer ranks 24th nationally on vault with an average of 9.842 and also leads West Virginia on floor with a 9.821 average.
Ohio State holds a 14-11 lead in the all-time series.
MILLER EARNS THIRD BIG TEN FOW
Sarah Miller earned her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award of the season, the conference office announced Feb. 7. A Buckeye has won the award each of the last three weeks and four of the five weeks this season.
Miller posted three Top 3 finishes as the Buckeyes set a team season high score of 195.575 Feb. 4 at Denver. She recorded a career-high 9.900 on the balance beam to take first place while tying for third on floor exercise (9.800) and vault (9.875) in the Buckeyes’ narrow loss to the Pioneers.
SHAFFER NAMED TOP FRESHMAN
Melanie Shaffer was named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week Jan. 31 after setting career highs on beam and floor while tying her career best on vault en route to a pair of event wins as the Buckeyes posted a season-high team score of 195.450 against Bowling Green and Western Michigan.
Shaffer won vault with a score of 9.825, tying her career-best set Jan. 22 against Illinois, and floor with a career-high 9.850. The freshman also set her career high on beam with a 9.800 to tie for third.
MILLER AGAIN NAMED TOP ROOKIE
Sarah Miller was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time in three weeks, the conference office announced Jan. 24.
Miller placed first on balance beam and floor exercise in the Buckeyes’ tie against Illinois Jan. 22. The freshman tied her career-high with a 9.875 on beam and set a career best with a 9.925 on floor. Miller also tied for third with a 9.825 on vault.
MILLER EARNS BIG TEN AWARD
Sarah Miller earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after helping the Buckeyes upset No. 23 Minnesota, the conference office announced Jan. 10. The award marked the first such honor for an Ohio State gymnast.
Miller, from Collegeville, Pa., took the event title on beam with a score of 9.875 while tying for second on vault at 9.800 and third on floor exercise at 9.750. The 9.875 beam score ranked third nationally over the first week of competition.
Ohio State takes on Michigan State at 6 p.m. Feb. 18 and Kentucky at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at St. John Arena.
