COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 Buckeye rowing team could not have asked for more perfect conditions on their home river Sunday, despite slight choppy waters and a mild tailwind. A good-size crowd made its way to the banks of the Scioto River amid sunny skies and fair temperatures to watch the Scarlet and Gray take on No. 10 Michigan, No. 7 Michigan State and No. 8 USC in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio State will return to action May 1 after a brief hiatus to compete in the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich.

The Ohio State Second Novice Eight was first on the water, challenging Michigan and Michigan State. The Wolverines, Spartans and Buckeyes finished in the aforementioned order with times of 7:06.70, 7:08.86 and 7:10.26, respectively.

The Buckeye First Novice Eight (6:54.36) put its boat to the test next, falling just short of Michigan (6:47.55) as Michigan State went on to nab the top time in 6:45.70.

The Second Varsity Four – Ashley Dzurnak, Kara Shropshire, Katie Coons, Farrah Edwards and MacKenzie Pecor – was one of two Buckeye boats to finish second, clocking in at 7:36.63. Michigan State took first in 7:33.60, while Michigan trailed behind its competitors with a time of 7:36.70.

The First Varsity Four – Stephanie Johnson, Kate Sweeney,  Anniken Ellingsen, Ellen Heister and Samantha Getz – added the USC Trojans to their competition. USC was first to finish in 7:21.40, while Michigan State followed (7:26.40) and the Buckeyes topped the Wolverines 7:31.00-7:31.78.

Ohio State’s Second Varsity Eight – Jill Mohr, Tess Prescott, Claudia Schiwy, Ulrike Denker, Mandy Merritt, Sara Wallace, Lindsey Titus, Caroline McPherson and Kristin DiJosie – timed in at 6:29.10, close behind Michigan (6:27.10) to earn second. Michigan State followed in 6:31.48 and USC trailed with a time of 6:34.16.

The First Varsity Eight race closed out a speedy regatta. The Buckeye crew of Ingrid Aasaaren, Katie Flarida, Emily Walsh, Emily Ralph, Erin Shropshire, Carolin Helmholz, Claudia Herpertz, Charlott Goldstein and Erika Benford was fourth (6:30.38). USC led the final race in 6:18.00, while Michigan State (6:19.79), Michigan (6:28.47) were second and third, respectively.
