Estero, Fla. – The No. 15 Ohio State men’s hockey team shut out No. 8 Cornell, 2-0, in the consolation game of the Everblades College Classic at TECO Arena. OSU goalie Mike Betz made 22 saves for his fourth shut out of the season. JB Bittner tallied the game-winning goal and Scott May sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 17 seconds remaining.
Ohio State, which ended its three-game losing streak, improves to 10-7-1 (6-5-1 CCHA). Cornell drops to 8-4-1 (4-1-1 ECAC). Northern Michigan and Maine will meet in the championship game at 7:30 tonight.
There was no scoring in the first period. The Buckeyes did not allow Cornell a shot on goal until 12 minutes had gone by in the game. For the stanza, Ohio State outshot the Big Red, 12-5. The Buckeyes had a number of chances, but Cornell goalie Dave LeNeveu stopped all 12 Buckeye shots. Three of Cornell’s five shots came on its second power play of the period.
The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead 4:30 into the second period, as JB Bittner redirected a Ryan Smith pass from in front of the net. Chris Olsgard also assisted on the play. The Buckeyes posted 10 shots on goal and held Cornell to eight. The Buckeyes had a 5×3 power play for 39 seconds, but were unable to convert.
In the third period, the Buckeyes held on for the win. Betz stopped all nine Cornell shots, while OSU posted six. May ended the scoring with his empty-netter at 19:43, assisted by Pete Broccoli and Eric Skaug. Broccoli posted three points, on a goal and two assists, in the tournament.
The Buckeyes return to action with a two-game road series at Western Michigan Jan. 4-5. The squads will face off at 7:05 p.m. both nights at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. Ohio State returns home to Value City Jan. 11-12, following 11 consecutive road games, to face Lake Superior State.
