ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 15 Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champion Minnesota, 7-2, in the US Hockey Hall of Fame Game at the Xcel Energy Center Saturday. The game was the season opener for both schools. OSU drops to 0-1-0 on the year and Minnesota moves to 1-0-0.

The Gophers got on the board first, as freshman Thomas Vanek scored on the rebound of a Barry Tallackson shot at the 7:49 mark of the first period. Ohio State goalie Mike Betz was outstanding in the period, posting 19 saves on 20 Gopher shots. The Buckeyes were able to get just four shots on goal in the stanza. With each team skating a man down, the Gophers’ Matt DeMarchi received a major penalty and a game misconduct for checking from behind on Buckeye Paul Caponigri at the 15:05 mark, giving the Buckeyes a five-minute power play. However, two Buckeyes took penalties 11 seconds apart to put the Gophers on the power play, four-on-three. Neither team could score on its power-play chances in the period.

Minnesota scored three goals in the second period, including two on the power play, to end the stanza up, 4-0. Troy Riddle scored unassisted 48 seconds into the period. At 14:58, Dan Welch tipped a Keith Ballard shot past Betz with UM on the power play. Barry Tallackson ended the scoring in the period for the Gophers, scoring with UM a man up at 17:02. The Gophers outshot the Buckeys, 19-8, in the period.

The Gophers scored three 5×3 power-play goals in the third period, by Ballard, Tyler Hirsch and Gino Guyer to go up, 7-0. R.J. Umberger broke UM goalie Travis Weber’s shutout with a shorthanded goal at 11:01 after he stole the puck from a Gopher in the UM zone and beat Weber high from the right faceoff circle. Lee Spector scored the first goal of his Buckeye career at the 17:40 mark of the period, scoring unassisted from in front of the UM goal. UM had 12 shots on goal in the stanza, OSU 11.

Betz made 44 saves on 51 Gopher shots in the game for the Buckeyes. Weber stopped 21-of-23 Buckeye shots.

In the game, OSU was 0-for-6 on the power play. Minnesota was 5-for-11.

The Buckeyes open CCHA competition next weekend with a trip to Alaska Fairbanks for a two-game series. The Buckeyes and Nanooks will face off at 11:05 p.m. EDT Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19.
