Estero, Fla. – The No. 15 Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. l1 Maine, 6-2, in the first round of the Everblades College Classic at TECO Arena tonight. Northern Michigan topped Cornell in the first game, 4-3, in double overtime.
Ohio State and Cornell will face off in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Saturday, with Northern Michigan and Maine meeting in the championship tilt at 7:30 p.m.
With the loss, the Buckeyes’ third in a row, Ohio State drops to 9-7-1 overall and Maine improves to 9-5-3. Maine now leads the all-time series with Ohio State, 10-1-0.
Maine got on the board quickly, as Martin Kariya tallied following a scramble in front of the net 1:06 into the game. The Black Bears increased their lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal by Prestin Ryan at the 4:44 mark. Maine outshot the Buckeyes, 16-7, in the period.
In the second period, Maine tallied three times to take a 5-0 lead into the second intermission. Don Richardson scored 2:35 into the period, followed by a Lucas Lawson power-play goal at 6:37. The Black Bears ended the scoring in the stanza when Kariya tallied his second goal of the game at 9:03. The Buckeyes put 11 shots on goal, with Maine posting 12.
OSU goalie Kelly Holowaty saw his first action of the season in the third period, as he replaced starter Mike Betz at the start of the stanza. The Buckeyes broke UMaine goalie Mike Morrison’s shutout 1:12 into the third period, as Pete Broccoli tallied his first goal of the season, assisted by Scott May and Daymen Bencharski. Maine answered with a goal at 5:56, as Richardson scored his second goal of the night. Broccoli posted his second goal of the night on the power play at 8:29, assisted by JB Bittner and Mike McCormick. This marks the first multiple-goal game for Broccoli, who entered the game with two career markers. With the assist, McCOrmick extended his scoring streak to four games. The Buckeyes posted 20 shots on net in the period, holding Maine to seven.
Betz made 23 saves for the Buckeyes, while Holowaty posted 6. Morrison had 36 saves for the Black Bears. For the game, Ohio State outshot Maine, 38-35.
Ohio State was 1-for-4 on the power play and Maine was 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
