COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 Ohio State men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) MIVA match at No. 11 Lewis Tuesday night in Romeoville, Ill. The Buckeyes fell to 8-9 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Freshman Miles Johnson led the team with 10 kills and added two service aces. Junior Michael Henchy added nine kills and two service aces, while Driss Guessous chipped in eight. Juniors Andrew Lutz and Dustan Neary each had three block assists and freshman Christy Blough totaled 33 assists.
Geoff Powell finished with 14 kills for Lewis (13-4, 5-2) to lead all student-athletes. Greg Petty had 12 kills and two service aces, while Eric Fitterer totaled nine kills and three aces. Libero Lucas Yanez had a match-best nine digs.
The Buckeyes came out in set one on a roll and took a quick 8-4 lead to force an early Lewis timeout. The Flyers regrouped and used an 8-2 run to jump ahead at 12-10. Back-to-back kills from Henchy brought Ohio State within one at 18-17, but a two-point rally moved the Flyers to a 22-19 advantage. The home squad held on to take the set, 25-21.
Locked at four to open the second set, Lewis used a 6-1 to take a 10-5 lead. The Flyers moved ahead at 18-12, but a pair of Henchy kills cut the home team’s lead to three at 19-16 and forced Lewis to take a timeout. The Flyers secured set point at 24-18 before the Buckeyes stalled the match with a 3-0 run. The late rally was not enough as Lewis captured a 25-21 win.
The Flyers came out of intermission with momentum and jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage. A pair of two-point rallies late in the set brought the Buckeyes within one at 16-15, but Lewis regrouped and used a 3-0 run for a 19-15 lead. The Flyers sealed the match with a 25-20 victory.
Ohio State travels to sunny California for the Active Ankle Classic, March 14-15, hosted by Long Beach State. The Buckeyes will take on the tournament host Friday in a 10 p.m. ET match and will conclude the weekend with an 8 p.m. ET match vs. Cal State Northridge. Both matches will be played in Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.
