No. 14 Buckeyes Win 3-0 Over Missouri S&T

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 14 Ohio State (4-2) won 3-0 for the second-consecutive night, this time vs. Missouri S&T (1-4) Saturday at the Covelli Center. Ohio State defeated Maryville by the same score Friday.

Ohio State won the three sets Saturday 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 against the Miners.

Shane Wetzel led Ohio State with 12 kills and five digs. Jacob Pasteur contributed 10 kills and five digs as well. Noah Platfoot was credited with 31 assists in the win.

How it Happened 

Set 1 

Missouri S&T started with a 3-0 lead before Ohio State freshman Shane Wetzel notched the first Buckeye kill of the match. Another Wetzel kill made it 4-3 Miners before Justin Howard’s kill on an overpass tied it at 4-all. Howard put the Buckeyes in the lead on another kill, 5-4. Back-to-back aces by Wetzel and a kill by Jacob Pasteur made it 9-5 Buckeyes. The Miners called timeout after a back row kill from Pasteur made it 10-5 Ohio State. The Buckeyes went up 15-9 on a Pasteur kill. The Miners scored the next three points but Ohio State maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way to capture the first set, 25-17. Wetzel and Howard each had four kills with Pasteur adding three. The Buckeyes hit .500 while the Miners managed a .118 hitting percentage.

Set 2 

It was the Buckeyes who started with the opening three points in the second set. The Miners called timeout with Ohio State leading 5-0 following a Wetzel kill. Ohio State built the lead to 11-5 on a Wetzel kill from the back row. An ace and a pair of Pasteur kills made it 15-8 Buckeyes. Missouri S&T called its second timeout of the set after a Noah Platfoot solo block made it 19-10 Ohio State. The Buckeyes scored six of the next 12 points to win the set 25-16. Wetzel led after two sets with nine kills followed by Pasteur with eight.


The Buckeyes jumped to a 7-1 lead after a Pasteur ace before the Miners called timeout. Missouri S&T made it 10-5 Ohio State before a Ben Braun kill put the Buckeyes back up by six. The Miners then scored the next three points to trail 11-8. A Wetzel kill put Ohio State up 15-8. The Miners call its final timeout of the set with Ohio State leading 18-10. Missouri S&T scored three of the next four points before a Miner error made it 20-13 Ohio State. The Buckeye finished off the match and the set by scoring five of the final eight points to win 25-16 and the match 3-0.

The Buckeyes continue their four-game home stand with a pair of games against Princeton. Ohio State and the Tigers tangle at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday next week at the Covelli Center. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will be streamed by B1G+.
