MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 14/15 Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Central Collegiate Hockey Association foe Northern Michigan, 5-2, Friday at Berry Events Center. The loss, OSU’s fourth in a row, drops the squad to 21-10-3 overall and 15-8-2 in the league. The Wildcats improve to 17-14-2, 13-11-1 in the CCHA.

The Buckeyes and Wildcats will end the two-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Berry Events Center.

In the first period, NMU scored two goals in under three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Jimmy Jackson scored at the 13:21 mark, followed by a Bryce Cockburn goal at 15:54. The Buckeyes cut the Wildcats’ lead to one with just 21 seconds remaining in the period, however, as the squad converted on the lone power-play chance of the stanza. Scott May set up Daymen Bencharski in front of the net, who pushed the puck past NMU goalie Craig Kowalski. Paul Caponigri also assisted on the tally. The Wildcats put 10 shots on goal, OSU six, in the stanza.

The second period ended with the Buckeyes trailing, 3-1. There was no scoring until the 16:39 mark, when the Wildcats’ Mike Stutzel scored, assisted by Dirk Southern. OSU was unable to score on its one power play chance. NMU was 0-for-2 with the man advantage and ended the period with two seconds remaining on its third power-play opportunity of the game. OSU had seven shots on goal in the period, NMU six.

The Wildcats added to their lead at the eight-minute mark of the third, as Jackson scored a power-play goal, his second tally of the game. The teams then traded goals 11 seconds apart for the 5-2 final. Southern scored at the 18:40 mark for NMU. Doug Andress scored at 18:51, as his shot went in off Kowalski’s glove. Nate Guenin and Luke Pavlas had the assists on the score. OSU outshot NMU, 7-6, in the stanza. The Buckeyes had a season-low 20 shots on goal in the game. Northern Michigan had 22 shots on net.

OSU went 1-for-3 on the power play and held the Wildcats scoreless on 5-of-6 chances.
