COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite five goals by Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.), Ohio State (7-2 overall, 1-1 American Lacrosse Conference) lost in the final 22 seconds to No. 17 Johns Hopkins (7-4, 4-2), 11-10, Saturday, at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. Blue Jay Erin Wellner (Sr., East Williston, N.Y.) scored a free position goal to break a 10-10 tie for the Johns Hopkins win.

The Blue Jays led 6-4 at halftime, but the Buckeyes responded with five consecutive goals to take a 9-6 lead with 10:54 remaining in the game. Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) opened the second half scoring for Ohio State at 25:16. Mirick added her third and fourth goals at 20:42 and 17:22, respectively. Lauren Cochran (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) scored at 14:45 and Tracey Bounds’ (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) second goal of the game at 10:54 completed the run. Kate Barcomb (So., Middlebury, Vt.) started the Hopkins comeback with an unassisted goal at the 8:54 mark, and 1:29 later Heidi Pearce (So., Chestertown, Md.) scored an unassisted goal, her third of the game, to cut the Ohio State lead to 9-8. Liz Holland (Jr., Catonsville, Md.) tied the game at nine with a free position goal at the 6:39 mark, and Christy Peterson (Sr., Fallston, Md.) put the Blue Jays ahead with a free position goal with 4:41 remaining.

Ohio State would answer, as Oliver intercepted a pass from Hopkins goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Jr., Garden City, N.Y.) and fed Mirick for the tying goal with only 47 seconds left. However, the Blue Jays won the ensuing draw control, and Wellner was fouled. She buried the free position shot to put Hopkins back on top, and although Ohio State won the final draw control the Buckeyes could not get off a shot in the final seconds. Hopkins jumped out early on the Buckeyes, scoring three goals in the first 8:07 of the game. Meghan Burnett (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) scored off an assist from Wellner at the 25:19 mark to open the scoring, and Peterson scored her first goal on a free position shot with 22:38 left in the first half. Jamie Larrimore (Sr., Chestertown, Md.) scored her only goal of the game off an assist from Peterson just 45 seconds later, but Mirick put Ohio State on the board 16 seconds later to make it a 3-1 game at the 21:37 mark.

After goals by Barcomb and Pearce, both assisted by Wellner, sandwiched a goal by Bounds gave Hopkins a 5-2 lead, Alexia Vogler (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Mirick scored back-to-back goals to cut the Hopkins lead to 5-4 with 5:16 left in the half. Pearce ended the first-half scoring with a goal off a pass from Burnett, giving the Blue Jays a 6-4 halftime lead.

Mirick scored a game-high five goals for Ohio State, while Wellner led the Blue Jays with a goal and three assists. McDonald made 16 saves for the Hopkins, while Buckeye goalkeeper Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) stopped 11 shots for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes then return home to face 14th-ranked Notre Dame (6-1) at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 9.
