COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State rowing head coach Andy Teitelbaum stressed during preseason the high expectations of this 2011 squad was going to be achieved partly because of a renewed energy toward training. It seems that preparation paid off Saturday afternoon as the 13th-ranked Buckeyes won four of six races vs. No. 11 Michigan on the Scioto River at Griggs Reservoir.

One of the most impressive performances of the afternoon was the 11.8-second win by the First Varsity Eight of Ellen Heister, Allison Elber, Carolin Helmholz, Claudia Herpertz, Ulrike Denker, Claire-Louise Bode, Emily Walsh, Claudia Schiwy and coxswain Erika Benford. The Scarlet and Gray crossed the finish line in 6:30.2, while the Wolverines finished in 6:42.0.

The Second Varsity Eight’s 8.7-second win was notable as well. The crew, guided by coxswain Samantha Getz, of Cori Meinert, Tess Prescott, Ingrid Aasaaren, Samantha Fowle, Mandy Merritt, Caroline McPherson, Anniken Ellingsen and Kate Sweeney sounded the horn in 6:37.6, ahead of the Wolverine’s 6:46.3.

The Buckeye Four boats also posted victories on the afternoon. The Second Varsity Four (Katherine Tylinski, Ashley Dzurnak, Stephanie Johnson, Sarah Cornish, coxswain Kristin DiJosie) won by 6.6 seconds, finishing in 7:42.3 compared to the Maize and Blue’s (3rd four) time of 7:48.9.

The Ohio State First Varsity Four edged Michigan by 1.6 seconds. Jill Mohr, Emily Ralph, Lindsey Titus, Kara Shropshire and coxswain MacKenzie Pecor held on for the win, clocking in with a time 7:27.3. The Wolverines’ time was 7:28.9.

The First and Second Novice Eights for Ohio State fell short of Michigan to open the afternoon. The 2N8 of Brianna Sulenski, Marissa Davis, Katelyn Pagano, Ashley Pryor, Kate Cline, Taylor Urban, Charlene Jones, Michelle Voss and coxswain Natalie Pantalos finished in 7:18.6, while Michigan crossed the line in 7:10.4.

The 1N8 (Katie King, Ellen Haas, Katy Cook, Lauren Eckles, Rixt Miedema, Brittney Wex, Lauren Franke, Sarah Corna and coxswain Megan Obrien) debut with a time of 7:02.9. Michigan finished in 6:59.8.

The Buckeyes will welcome Michigan, Virginia and Clemson for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge April 3 on the Scioto River. The first session will begin at 9 a.m., with the second half of the regatta slated to begin at 1 p.m.
