No. 13 Buckeyes Victorious over No. 10 Virginia, Advance to ITA National Indoors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the doubles point and three three-set wins, the No. 13-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated No. 10 Virginia, 4-2, Sunday in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center to earn a berth in the ITA Team Indoor Championship. The match between the Buckeyes (2-0) and Cavaliers (1-1) was the championship of the Columbus site of ITA Kickoff Weekend.

Against the Cavaliers, the Buckeyes won the doubles point with victories on courts one and three for the early 1-0 lead. Virginia then pushed ahead 2-1 with straight-set wins on courts six and one. The remaining four singles matches went to a third set. Buckeye sophomore Irina Cantos Siemers notched a win over the nation’s 11th-ranked player on court two to tie the match at two. Lisa Hofbauer posted a win on court three for a 3-2 Ohio State lead. The final two matches had nearly simultaneous match points, with Lucia Marzal clinching the Buckeye win on court four.

Hofbauer and Marzal led the Buckeyes with two singles wins each during ITA Kickoff Weekend. Marzal and Cantos Siemers teamed up to go a team-best 2-0 in doubles. The Buckeyes opened the weekend and their dual match slate with a 4-0 win over Syracuse Saturday.

The Buckeyes will be making their fifth appearance at the ITA Team Indoor Championship in the last six years, including the third in a row. The 2021 edition, with an eight-team field, will be Feb. 5-7 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, hosted by Oklahoma State.

“I’m just so proud of the team. They fought for everything out there and we couldn’t ask for anything more from them. Virginia is a very good team and that was a four hour battle. Matches like this are what make college tennis everything that it is. I hope we can take this win as motivation to get right back to work.”

 

In Doubles

  • After the Cavaliers won the first doubles match off the court, Ohio State won the next two to clinch the doubles point.
  • On court three, the duo of Cantos Siemers and Marzal posted a 6-2 victory.
  • On court one, the Buckeye tandem of Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen won 7-5 over Natasha Subhash and Vivian Glozman. Boulais and Allen won the final two games, breaking for the win and team doubles point.

In Singles

  • The Cavaliers posted straight-set wins on courts six and one for a 2-1 lead. The remaining matches all went to a third set.
  • 78-ranked Cantos Siemers tied the match at two with a three-set win over Virginia’s No. 11-ranked Natasha Shubhash. The Buckeye rolled in the first set, 6-1, but dropped the second, 7-5. In the third, Cantos Siemers won 6-2.
  • Hofbauer prevailed in three sets on court three against No. 47-ranked Rosie Johanson. Hofbauer rallied to force a tiebreaker in the first set, which she won, 7-5. Johanson tied the match with a 6-2 second-set win. In the third set, Hofbauer got out to a 5-3 lead and sealed the match, winning on the no-ad point with UVA serving.
  • On court four, Marzal won the first set against Hibah Shaikh, 7-5, but dropped the second, 6-1, for a third set. In the third, Marzal broke for 6-5 and served it out to clinch the team win.
  • As Marzal clinched on court four, Luna Dormet had match point on court five, up 5-1 in the third with UVA serving 40-40. Dormet had dropped the first set, 6-3, before winning the second in a tiebreaker. The senior had broken on the no-ad point to force the second set tiebreaker and extend the match.
