MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 13/14 Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by Northern Michigan in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association Game, 2-1, Friday at Berry Events Center.
The loss ends the Buckeyes’ five-game conference winning streak and drops the team to 6-4-0 on the year and 5-2-0 in league play. The Wildcats improve to 4-3-0, 3-2-0 in the CCHA.
The Buckeyes and Wildcats will complete the series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Berry Events Center.
The Wildcats scored the only goals of the first period. Justin Kinnunen tallied the first goal, as Andrew Contois picked off a Buckeye clearing attempt and passed the puck across the crease to Kinnuen for the score at 6:48. At 15:28, Jamie Milam scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-0. Each team had eight shots on net in the stanza and the Buckeyes were scoreless on the only two power plays.
Ohio State cut the Wildcat lead to one 5:36 into the middle stanza. Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) picked up the puck after Dan Knapp (So., Rochester, Mich.) and Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) battled along the boards in the NMU zone. Caponigri skated to the middle of the ice and beat NMU goalie Craig Kowalski high. The goal gives Caponigri at least one point in every game he has played this season, extending his scoring streak to seven. The Buckeyes were unable to score on their one power-play chances in the period. OSU held the Wildcats scoreless on the power play, including 1:27 of a 5×3 advantage. OSU goalie Mike Betz (Sr., Elizabeth, Pa.) stopped all six Wildcat shots in the period, including some from point-blank range. Kowalski stopped 9-of-10 Buckeye attempts. There was no scoring in the third. The Buckeyes pressed for a goal, outshooting the Wildcats, 14-9, but were unable to get the equalizer. The squad pulled Betz with 1:05 left for the extra attacker.
Neither team was able to score on the power play. OSU went 0-for-4, while holding the Wildcats scoreless on three chances. The Buckeyes have not allowed a power-play goal in the last three games.
Betz stopped 21-of-23 NMU shots. Kowalski made 31 saves in 32 Buckeye shots.
