HONOLULU – The No. 12 Ohio State men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 21-25) match to No. 7 UCLA Friday night on day two of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational in Honolulu. The Buckeyes move to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
Junior Andrew Lutz finished with nine kills and three block assists to lead Ohio State in the match. Classmate Michael Henchy added six kills and three blocks (1s, 2a), while redshirt freshman Driss Guessous had five kills and three blocks (1s, 2a). Freshman Gabriel Domecus had a team-best nine digs.
Robart Page had a match-best 12 kills and four blocks to lead the Bruins (2-1). Gonzalo Quiroga finished with 10 kills and five service aces, while Michael Fisher had seven kills in the match.
UCLA captured a quick 4-0 lead to start the match and pushed ahead for an 11-5 advantage. The Buckeyes responded with a four-point rally highlighted by back-to-back from Lutz and Shawn Herron, but the Bruins regrouped with an 8-0 run to take a 19-9 lead. UCLA finished the set with a 25-14 win.
The Bruins kicked off set two with a 6-2 advantage to force an early Ohio State timeout. UCLA progressively built on to its lead and moved ahead 21-14. A pair of kills by Henchy sent the Buckeyes on a four-point run to cut deficit at 21-18. A UCLA error followed by back-to-back Guessous solo blocks forced a Bruin timeout at 24-22, but the comeback was just short as UCLA took the set, 25-23.
A kill from Lutz gave the Buckeyes a slim 4-3 lead to open the third and a kill by Alex Judkins led to a 7-5 Ohio State advantage. OSU moved ahead at 13-10 before a small Bruin run locked the set at 14 apiece. Another small UCLA rally pushed the Bruins to an 18-16 lead and the team used a 5-1 run to reach match point at 24-20. A kill by Guessous stalled the Bruins, but UCLA held on for a 25-21 victory.
The Buckeyes close out the Outrigger Invitational Saturday with a match vs. No. 11 Penn State. First serve set for 4 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET in Honolulu.
