COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (19-11 overall) men’s volleyball squad came back from a 2-0 Loyola-Chicago (24-5) lead to send the match to the deciding game, but fell 16-14 in the final game. The 30-24, 30-25, 25-30, 22-30, 16-14 Rambler win advances Loyola-Chicago to the MIVA Tournament Championship match at 7 p.m., Saturday at Ball State. Eighth-ranked Ball State (21-7) defeated 10th-ranked Lewis (11-20), 3-1 (36-34, 30-28, 25-30, 30-22) to advance to Saturday’s championship match.
Ohio State’s Pieter Olree (Sr., Reading, Pa.) had a match-high 31 kills (.295) for the Buckeyes with Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) adding 25. Rambler Brad Stoub (Sr., Palos Park, Ill.) had a team-high 26 kills (.320) for Loyola-Chicago with Justin Schnor (Jr., Racine, Wis.) adding 21 (.385).
After 11 ties and four lead changes, the Ramblers broke a 22-22 tie off an OSU service error to take a 23-22 lead. Kills by Schnor and Stoub, an OSU error and an ace serve by Shawn Schroeder (So., St. Louis, Mo.) opened a 27-22 lead for Loyola-Chicago. A Shane Davis (Jr., Denver, Iowa) kill set game point at 29-24 and a block by Davis and Dan Haas (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) ended the game at 30-24. Loyola hit .258 for the game to .119 for Ohio State.
The Ramblers broke a 7-7 tie with kills by Haas and Schnor to take a 9-7. Loyola-Chicago held the lead for the rest of the game and with an OSU error, won the game 30-25. The Buckeyes closed a 27-21 Ramber lead with kills by Olree and Ricardo Garcia (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) and a Loyola-Chicago error to 27-24 but would come no closer. The Cardinals hit .552 for the game to OSU’s .300.
Trailing 2-0 in games, Ohio State broke a 19-19 tied with a block by Mark Peckham (So., London, Ontario) and Adam Pedersen (So., Muskego, Wis.) to take a 20-19 lead. Kills by Olree and Mike Wauligman (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) made it 22-19. OSU held the lead and with a Rambler error won the game, 30-25. OSU hit .378 for the game to .265 for Loyola-Chicago.
Tied at seven-all in game four, a block by Trantow and Pedersen put OSU ahead, 8-7. Kills by Olree and Pedersen and a Rambler error made it 11-7. The Ramblers would come no closer than three the rest of the contest as a Trantow kill ended the game at 30-22, tying the match at two games each. Ohio State hit .576 for the game to .200 for Loyola-Chicago.
Game five saw 10 ties, the last at 14-all. A Stoub kill set match point at 15-14 for the Ramblers and an OSU error ended the game at 16-14, sending, Loyola-Chicago to the MIVA Championship match. The Ramblers hit .238 for the game to .174 for the Buckeyes.
For the match, Ohio State hit .309 to Loyola-Chicago’s .303. The Buckeyes had a 79-69 margin in kills. OSU had a 4-2 advantage in aces with Trantow recording a match-high two. The Buckeyes gave up 17 service errors to 10 for the Ramblers. Loyola-Chicago had a 49-41 advantage in digs with Davis picking up a match-high 15 and Dan Kellum (Jr., Tipton, Mich.) adding 14. Each squad had 9.5 team blocks in the match. OSU’s Pedersen collected a match-high of eight assists while Haas had a solo and five assists to lead the Ramblers.
