COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 12th-ranked Ohio State (15-10 overall, 8-5 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (32-30, 26-30, 30-23, 30-27) loss to No. 11 Lewis (17-9, 12-2) Saturday night in St. John Arena. Flyer Fabiano Barreto (So., Campinas, Brazil) scored a match-high 26 kills (.452) for Lewis with Victor Bird (Fr., Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) adding 17 (.294). Also in double-figures for the Flyers were James Elsea (So., Clovis, Calif.) with 12 and Kevin Miller (Jr., Racine, Wis.) with 10. Ohio State’s Pieter Olree had a team-high 24 kills (.259) for the Buckeyes with Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) adding 19 and Ricardo Garcia (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) 11.%^$

%^$Game one had five lead changes and 14 ties. Tied at 25, two Olree kills and an ace serve by Trantow gave OSU a 28-25 lead. Elsea’s kill cut the lead to 28-26. Olree’s kill set game point at 29-26 for the Buckeyes. Kills by Elsea and Barretto and an OSU error tied the game at 29. OSU took a 30-29 lead with an Olree kill. Barretto countered with a kill to tie the game at 30. A Buckeye error gave Lewis a 31-30 lead. Lewis won the game, 32-30, with a block by Miller and Bird. The Flyers hit .349 for the game to .372 for Ohio State.%^$

%^$A kill by Olree and a Flyer error gave OSU a 2-0 lead and the Buckeyes never trailed in the game two, winning 30-26 with an Adam Pederson (So., Muskego, Wis.) kill. OSU hit .576 for the game to .300 for Lewis.%^$

%^$Game three was the opposite of game two. An OSU service error and an Elsea kill gave Lewis a 2-0 lead. The Flyers held the lead to take a 30-23 win with a Barreto kill. Lewis hit .294 for the game to .027 for the Buckeyes.%^$

%^$With an Elsea block and a Buckeye error, Lewis opened game four 2-0. After eight ties and three lead changes, the Flyers overcame a 15-12 OSU lead with kills by Bird and Elsea and an OSU error to tie the game at 15. Trantow’s kill gave OSU a 16-15 lead but Lewis ran the next five points on kills from Bird and Barreto, a block by Elsea and Barreto and two OSU errors to take a 20-16 lead. OSU closed to within one with a Brett Hamilton (Fr., Rockville, Md.) ace at 21-20. Lewis held the lead and went on to take a 30-27 win on a Bird kill. The Flyers hit .433 for the game to .125 for OSU.%^$

%^$For the match, Lewis hit .343 to .268 for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 72-71 advantage in kill and had four aces to two for the Flyers. OSU had 14 service errors to 10 for Lewis. The Flyers had a 43-31 margin in digs with Ryan Stuntz (So., Redondo Beach, Calif.) recording a match-high 16 while OSU’s Mark Lehman (Jr., Galena, Ohio) had 10. The Flyers enjoyed a 14 to nine advantage in blocks with Miller collecting a solo and nine assists for Lewis. Flyer setter Jose Martins (So., Campinas, Brazil) and Buckeye Mark Peckham (So., London, Ontario) each recorded 60 assists in the match.%^$

%^$Ohio State returns to action at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 when the Buckeyes play at Findlay. OSU then returns home for a 7 p.m, Friday, April 12 contest with Indiana-Purdue and a 7 p.m., Saturday, April 13 match with Mercyhurst to end the regular season.
