HAMILTON, N.Y. – The No. 12 Ohio State men’s hockey team beat non-conference opponent Colgate, 2-1, Friday at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. led the Buckeyes with two assists, while goalie Dave Caruso made 32 saves for his second win of the year.
The win improves the Buckeyes’ record to 9-5-0 on the year, while the Raiders fall to 4-4-1 on the season.
The Buckeyes wrap the weekend up at 7 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on No. 11 Cornell in James Lynah Rink.
The Buckeyes ended the first period trailing, 1-0, as Colgate’s Rob Brown scored a power-play goal at 16:07, beating Ohio State goalie Dave Caruso (So., Roswell, Ga.) with a slap shot through traffic. OSU’s best chance in the period came on the power play with just under seven minutes remaining, as Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) hit the post. The Buckeyes were 0-for-2 with the man advantage in the period. The squad stopped 2-of-3 chances in the period, including 43 seconds of a 5×3 disadvantage. The period ended with one second remaining on the Raiders’ fourth power-play of the game. Ohio State was outshot in the period, 10-4.
Ohio State scored two goals in the middle period to go up, 2-1. Rod Pelley (So., Kitimat, British Columbia) got OSU on the board at 8:51, scoring on a wraparound with the teams skating four aside. Scott May (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia) and Nate Guenin (So., Aliquippa, Pa.) had the assists on the goal. Caponigri put the Buckeyes ahead with a shorthanded goal at 15:24, taking a pass from Matt Waddell (Fr., Armstrong, British Columbia) and skating in alone on CU goalie David Cann. May had the second assist on the goal. The Buckeyes had nine shots in the period, while Colgate had 11. Each team was scoreless on two power-plays in the period. There was no scoring in the third. OSU had three shots on net and Caruso stopped all 16 Raider attempts. OSU was 0-for-3 on the power play and stopped Colgate on two chances.
In the game, Ohio State was scoreless on six power-play chances and stopped Colgate on 6-of-7 opportunities.
Cann made 14 saves in net for the Raiders.
Caponigri’s shorthanded goal marked Ohio State’s second such goal in as many games and the squad’s second of the season. It was the second shorthanded tally of Caponigri’s career (Nov. 16, 2002 vs. Michigan State).
The father of current Buckeye volunteer coach and former goalie Kurt Brown (1993-96) played for Colgate from 1962-64 still holds the Raiders’ records for save percentage in a season and in a career.
May’s two points in the game give him 93 (35-58) in his career, just seven shy of the 100-point mark.
Colgate’s first-period power-play goal was the first allowed by the Buckeyes in three games and ended a stretch of 12-consecutive power-plays stopped.
