No. 12 Buckeyes Post ITA Kickoff Win over Old Dominion, 4-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Ohio State women’s tennis team opened ITA Kickoff Weekend with a 4-0 victory over Old Dominion Friday morning in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. Ohio State earned the doubles point and then notched three straight-set singles victories to advance to the site championship match. Kolie Allen and Irina Cantos Siemers were winners in both singles and doubles, with Kathleen Jones and Akanksha Bhan part of doubles victories and Lucia Marzal winning in singles.

Ohio State, now 2-0 on the year, will take on Wake Forest or No. 22 Tennessee in the site championship match at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. The winner will advance to the ITA Indoor National Championship. Old Dominion and Wake Forest or No. 22 Tennessee will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday in the consolation match.

“We are happy with today. It’s always nice to get to be at home playing the Kickoff Weekend. We knew today was going to be tough. Old Dominion is always very good. Tomorrow is going to be against a tough team with the National Indoors on the line. Hopefully we get a good crowd and play well again.”

In Doubles

  • The doubles point came down to court two.
  • The Buckeye tandem of Kolie Allen and Kathleen Jones rolled on court three, shutting out Shahar Biran and Alesya Yakubovich, 6-0.
  • The Monarchs posted a victory on court one, as Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Sofia Johnson defeated Sydni Ratliff and Isabelle Boulais, 6-3.
  • On court two against No. 52-ranked AlexandraViktorovich and Allison Isaacs, the Buckeye tandem of Irina Cantos Siemers and Akanksha Bhan had an early lead before the Monarchs pulled back on serve. ODU’s team broke on the no-ad point for a 5-4 lead, but the Buckeyes answered with a break and then took the next two games for a 7-5 match win to clinch the doubles point.

In Singles

  • The Buckeyes notched straight-set wins on courts two, four and six for the team victory.
  • On court six, Lucia Marzal dropped just two games to put the Buckeyes ahead 2-0, as she defeated Allison Isaacs, 6-0, 6-2.
  • Kolie Allen won in straight sets vs. Alesya Yakubovich on court four for the Buckeyes’ second point. Allen won the final three games of the first set and swept the second set for a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
  • Irina Cantos Siemers clinched the Buckeye victory, as she won in straight sets on court two vs. Sofia Johnson. In the first set, Cantos Siemers held for 6-5 and then broke on the no-ad point to take the set, 7-5. Johnson won the first two games of the second set before Cantos Siemers took control and claimed the set, 6-2.
  • The Buckeyes won the first set on the other three courts, that were all left unfinished.
