COLUMBUS, Ohio – – The No. 11 Ohio State men’s tennis team shut out Butler and Xavier, 7-0, in its 2005 home opener Friday at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. With the two wins, the Buckeyes opened the season with a 2-0 mark and remained undefeated in home openers under sixth-year head coach Ty Tucker. The Bulldogs fell to 1-2 and the Musketeers dropped to 1-1. Ohio State extended their home win streak to 19 matches after its two wins over Butler and Xavier. The streak dates back to the 2003 season starting with a 5-2 win over Purdue April 6.
Freshmen Buckeyes Drew Eberly (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Dominic Ozanne (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) made their home debut in the Scarlet and Gray. Eberly was 2-0 in singles as he played the No. 3 position in both matches. He defeated Butler’s Andy Bartish, 7-5, 6-2, and Xavier’s Justin Yeager, 6-3, 6-0. Eberly picked up two wins in doubles action as he paired with Dennis Mertens (Braaschatt, Belgium/Koninkiljk) against Butler and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales) in the Xavier match. In singles, Ozanne defeated Xavier’s Brian Quinn, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 position.
In the doubles portion, the Buckeyes swept both opponents on all three courts. The junior duo of Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Wilson, ranked No. 1 in the country, extended their overall record to 10-0 after an 8-4 win against Butler’s Bartish and James Low. Sophomores Joey Atas (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Devin Mullings (Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory) paired together on the No. 2 court and picked up two wins. In singles, Mullings, ranked No. 40 in the nation, and Atas, ranked No. 67, split the No. 1 position. Mullings defeated Butler’s Low, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot and Xavier’s JR Randall, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. Atas defeated Butler’s Parker Ross, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 and Xavier’s Jeremy Miller, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 1 position.
Junior Green saw action at the No. 4 singles spot for the Buckeyes and topped both his opponents. Wilson was positioned at the No. 6 spots against Butler and No. 5 against Xavier, while Mertens defeated Eric Breitenbach on the No. 5 court in the Butler match.
Up next, the Buckeyes return to tournament action as they travel Feb. 3-6 to the Washington Invitational in Seattle. Ohio State will be back in Columbus as the squad hosts Arkansas at 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.
