ESTERO, Fla. – The No. 11-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team upset No. 3-ranked Cornell, 1-0, in the consolation game of the Everblades College Classic at TECO Arena Sunday. R.J. Umberger scored the lone goal for the Buckeyes, while Dave Caruso recorded the shutout in net, the first of his career.
The Buckeyes improve to 13-4-2 overall (9-2-1 CCHA) and extend their unbeaten streak to six. The Big Red drop to 10-3-0 overall (5-1-0 ECAC). Earlier this season, Cornell had beaten Ohio State, 3-1, in Columbus.
OSU scored at 15:40 of the first period, as Umberger took a pass from Doug Andress and skated down the right side, beating Cornell goalie Todd Marr for his team-best 15th goal of the season. Miguel Lafleche also had an assist on the play. OSU was outshot in the period, 11-9.
There was no scoring in the second period. The Buckeyes were outshot, 7-6. OSU held the Big Red scoreless on three power-play chances in the period.
In the third period, the Buckeyes withstood pressure from the Big Red to preserve the one-goal lead. The Buckeyes outshot Cornell, 7-6, in the stanza. With the teams skating 4-on-4, the Big Red pulled their goalie with 1:02 left, but were unable to tie the game.
Caruso posted 24 saves for the win. Cornell’s Marr had 21 saves on 22 OSU shots.
The Buckeyes were held scoreless on the power play for the first time in six games, going 0-for-5. OSU stopped Cornell on all four of its power-play opportunities.
Umberger’s gamewinning goal was his fifth of the season and his fourth in the last six games. He is on a six-game scoring streak, with 9-4-13 totals during the stretch.
OSU returns to action at 5:05 p.m. Friday when it faces Princeton at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh.
