GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The 10th-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team completed a sweep of North Dakota with a 3-1 win Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The victory was the Buckeyes’ seventh in a row over the Fighting Sioux and the fifth sweep of an opponent this season. Ohio State improves to 16-10-4 overall with an 11-9-4 record in the WCHA. North Dakota is 3-25-2, 0-23-1 in the conference.

After a scoreless first period in which the Buckeyes outshot the Fighting Sioux 8-6, Ohio State opened the scoring 5:38 into the second period. Capitalizing on a 4-on-3 advantage, senior defenseman Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Chiefs) knocked a rebound from the right edge of the crease. The goal was Bowman’s seventh of the year, with assists by juniors Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves). The helpers were Keys’ 20th and Bonhomme’s 18th.

Ohio State increased its lead to 2-0 at 9:24 when junior Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) tallied her second goal of the series. Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) picked up the puck on a pass along the blue line from defensive partner Whitney Miller (Anchorage, Alaska/NAHA) and fired it on goal. Heywood picked up the loose rebound and jammed it into the net for her sixth lamplighter of the year. Chesson recorded her 20th assist while Miller had her second.

The Fighting Sioux cut the score to 2-1 at 4:59 of the third period while on the power play. Jenny Porter knocked in a bouncing puck from the left side of the net with assists from Jade Schirado.

With time winding down in the third period, North Dakota called a time out at 18:52 and pulled goaltender Brittany Kirkham for the extra attacker. Chesson battled for the puck in the neutral zone and skated it to the empty net, flicking it in for a final score of 3-1. The unassisted goal was her 11th of the year.

Overall, Ohio State had a 35-19 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes were 1-of-3 on the power play while UND was 1-of-4. Sophomore goaltender Liana Bonanno (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors) made 18 saves to improve to 2-3-1. Kirkham made 32 saves for the Fighting Sioux and is 3-24-2.

With her goal, Bowman increased her career point total to 97. She needs just three points to become the first Ohio State blueliner to reach the 100-point milestone and also take the top spot in career points by a defenseman.

Ohio State will continue its road swing next weekend with a series at No. 2 Wisconsin Feb. 9 and 11 in Madison, Wis. Games begin at 2:07 p.m. (CT) Friday and 11:07 a.m. Sunday at the Kohl Center.
