NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior goalie Mike Betz made 23 saves to lead the No. 10-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 2-0 shutout win over CCHA-opponent Notre Dame. The win gives OSU three points on the weekend, as the Buckeyes and Irish tied the opener, 3-3.

The Buckeyes had a solid defensive effort, stopping the Irish on eight power-play chances, including four in the third period. The shutout was Betz’s second of the year and the eighth of his career.

The win improves the Buckeyes to 18-6-3 on the year and 12-4-2 in the CCHA. The Irish fall to 9-13-6 overall, 7-10-3 in conference play. OSU moves to second place in the CCHA following a Michigan loss to Ferris State.

The Buckeyes return to action with a two-game home series against Western Michigan. OSU and the Broncos will face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 in Value City Arena.

OSU dominated the first period, outshooting the Irish, 20-4. Paul Caponigri got the Buckeyes on the board with his ninth goal of the year, as he stole the puck in the Notre Dame zone and beat ND goalie Morgan Cey high. The Irish did not have a shot until the 14:03 mark, when OSU goalie Mike Betz made a glove save on Rob Globke.

Ryan Kesler gave the Buckeyes a two-goal lead at the 5:01 mark of the second period, scoring on the power play following a roughing penalty to Cey. Dave Steckel got the puck to R.J. Umberger at the side of the net, who passed it to Kesler right in front of Cey. Cey made the original stick-save, but the puck got past and into the net for Kesler’s seventh goal of the season. OSU killed all four Notre Dame power-play chances in the stanza and scored on its lone chance. Notre Dame put 13 shots on net, while OSU had six. There was no scoring in the third period, as the teams each went 0-for-4 on the power play. The Buckeyes had 17 shots in the period and held the Irish to just six.

The Buckeyes had 43 shots on net in the game, with Cey making 41 saves.
