COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by No. 3 Michigan, 6-3, in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday in front of 12,391 fans. After a scoreless first period, the Wolverines scored five goals in the second to take a commanding lead. OSU mounted a comeback in the third, scoring three times, but U-M sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

The teams split the two-game series, as OSU posted a 4-1 win in the opener. The Buckeyes fall to 16-7-3 on the year and 13-4-1 in the CCHA, in second place five points behind the first-place Wolverines. Michigan now is 19-6-1 and 16-2-0 in league play.

There was no scoring in the first period, as Michigan outshot the Buckeyes, 7-5. The Buckeyes were unable to score on one power-play chance. U-M was 0-for-3.

The Wolverines exploded for five goals in the third period, as they outshot the Buckeyes, 16-9. Chad Kolarik got U-M on the board with a power-play goal at 4:59 and Jeff Tambellini scored just 16 seconds later at 5:15. Jason Ryznar added a goal at 9:52, followed by a Chad Kolarik score at 12:12 and Eric Werner’s goal at 17:00. The Wolverines outshot Ohio State, 16-9, in the period. U-M scored on its one power-play chance and held the Buckeyes scoreless on three chances.

In the third, Matt Beaudoin (So., Rock Forest, Quebec) got OSU on the board with a power-play goal at 4:44, assisted by Bryce Anderson (So., Waterloo, Iowa) and Kyle Hood (Fr., Osoysoos, British Columbia). Pelley then scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 5-3. Pelley’s first goal came at 7:32, as he put in the rebound of Tyson Strachan’s (So., Melfort, Saskatchewan) shot. JB Bittner (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the second assist on the goal. Pelley then scored at 12:37. Bittner won a faceoff from the right side of the Michigan net back to Pelley, who scored from the right point. Ohio State pulled its goalie with 2:30 remaining for the extra attacker, but could not get the puck past U-M goalie Al Montoya. Michigan sealed the win when T.J. Hensick scored into the empty net with 12 seconds remaining. Ohio State outshot the Wolverines in the period, 15-12. U-M was scoreless on two power-play chances and OSU was 1-for-2.

Each team went 1-for-6 on the power play in the game and had 11 penalties for 33 minutes.

The Wolverines outshot the Buckeyes in the game, 35-29. Buckeye junior goalie Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) started the game and played the first 37 minutes, making 18 saves, allowing five goals and suffering the loss. Ian Kesrerich (Parma, Ohio), in his first action since Dec. 11 at Clarkson, played 20:30 in relief, stopping all 11 U-M shots he faced.
