COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell to No. 1 Minnesota, 4-1, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 12-10-1 overall and 9-10-0 in the WCHA. The Golden Gophers improve to 20-1-2 on the year and 15-0-2 in the WCHA.

Ohio State and Minnesota close out the series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the OSU Ice Rink.

Minnesota scored a goal late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. UM’s Krissy Wendell scored a power-play goal at 18:42. Ohio State had three power-play opportunities in the period, including a 5-on-3 chances for 30 seconds, but the Buckeyes unable to capitalize. The Golden Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 13 to four in the first stanza.

Ohio State had its second 5-on-3 power play advantage for 48 seconds, two minutes into the second period, but OSU could not score. The Buckeyes tied the game with an even strength goal when sophomore defenseman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) skated in from the point to score her fifth goal of the season at 15:44. Senior Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) and junior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) assisted on Buckeye goal. OSU held Minnesota scoreless on a 5-on-3 power play for 1:20. The Golden Gophers clinched the lead two minutes later with a goal by Ashley Albrecht at 19:09. UM outshot OSU 13 to five in the second period.

In the third period, Minnesota added two additional goals securing its victory. Lyndsay Wall scored Minnesota’s second power-play goal of the game at 4:33. Golden Gopher Natalie Darwitz recorded the final goal of the game at 15:43. Minnesota tallied 13 shots to Ohio State five in final stanza.

Ohio State goalie Erika Vanderveer (So., Bradford, Ontario) tied her season-high 39 saves in the full 60 minutes of action. Minnesota’s goalie Jody Horak posted 13 saves in 59:44 minutes. The Golden Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 39-13. Ohio State held Minnesota scoreless on six of nine power-play chance. The Buckeyes were unable to score on their seven power-play opportunities.


With her one assist, Jana Harrigan extended her point streak to seven games this season. During her stretch Harrigan has posted four goals and nine assists for 13 points.
