COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State men’s volleyball team defeated Sacred Heart 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-12) in a Tuesday night match-up in St. John Arena. Ohio State improves to 3-3, while Sacred Heart, in its season opener, falls to 0-1.

The Buckeyes were led by senior opposite Shawn Sangrey, notching a match-high 12 kills. Redshirt freshman setter Peter Heinen and junior setter Kyle Lawrence dished out 19 and 13 assists, respectively, with senior outside hitter Anthony Hock accounted for five digs.

A Pioneer error and two Buckeye kills gave Ohio State a quick 3-0 advantage to open the match. With Lawrence serving, Ohio State tallied five-consecutive points to bring its lead to 11-3. Able to cut their deficit to three points, the Pioneers forced an Ohio State timeout at the 13-10 mark, but were unable to capitalize on their momentum and fell to the Buckeyes, 25-18, in the first set.

Exchanging points to open the second set, both squads found themselves tied at 3-3, before a Buckeye error and Pioneer kill gave Sacred Heart a 5-3 advantage. With Ohio State trailing, 16-14, the Buckeyes tallied six-consecutive points to take the lead at 20-16. A kill from Hock sealed the set for Ohio State, 25-19.

Up a point a 3-2 in the final stanza, a kill by John Tholen triggered a 9-1 run to take a 13-4 advantage. Back-to-back kills from freshman Michael Henchy put the Buckeyes up 16-8 and Ohio State closed out the set with a 25-12 win on a service ace from Chen Levitan.

The Buckeyes continue their homestand Thursday when they take on George Mason at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
