Ann Arbor, MI – The Ohio State Men’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday morning with a 4-0 win over Minnesota.
The Buckeyes entered the match ranked No. 1 in the nation and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The Buckeyes entered the week knowing they would face one of Wisconsin or Minnesota. Minnesota defeated Wisconsin on Wednesday and faced the Buckeyes on Friday.
The Buckeyes stuck to their normal doubles lineup of JJ Wolf/Martin Joyce, Alex Kobelt/Kyle Seelig and John McNally/Hunter Tubert. To no ones surprise, the Buckeyes took the match advantage, 1-0, through doubles play. The Buckeyes have been fantastic in doubles this season, having only lost the doubles point once in 2019.
No. 41 Kobelt/Seelig were the first to finish, defeating Milicevic/Alpeza 6-1 in dominant fashion. Kobelt and Seelig have been a consistent partnership throughout the season and are now 19-4 in doubles play together. Following in the footsteps of Seelig and Kobelt were JJ Wolf and Martin Joyce. Wolf/Joyce finished second with a 6-4 win over Allen/Ogilvy, giving the Buckeyes the 1-0 match lead. Wolf/Joyce are now 16-2 in doubles play in 2019. In addition, with his win in doubles, Martin Joyce reached 200 career wins as a Buckeyes (93 in singles, 107 in doubles).
Playing on four of the eight courts at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center, the Buckeyes started singles play with a lineup of Wolf, McNally, Joyce and Seelig. No. 1 JJ Wolf took on No. 82 Josip Krstanovic on Court 5 Friday morning, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. It was a dominant showing by Wolf as he picked up his 21st win over a ranked opponent, and advancing to 30-0 in singles play for the 2018-19 season. Following Wolf was fellow Cincinati-native John McNally, who defeated Milicevic 6-1, 6-3 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 advantage.
After some battling on courts 7 and 8, Alex Kobelt and Hunter Tubert took to the courts on 5 and 6. During the early goings of their matches, Martin Joyce battled in a second set tiebreaker and would go on to defeat his opponent 6-4, 7-6(3) to clinch the match victory for the Buckeyes.
Advancing to 27-2 on the season, Ohio State will next take on the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Semifinals. The Buckeyes faced the Wolverines in Ann Arbor last month, defeating the conference-rival 6-1. Michigan defeated Indiana on Friday morning 4-1 to advance to the semifinals. The Buckeyes and Wolverines will face one another at 10:00 am EST on Saturday.
