When the NHL Stanley Cup qualifiers start this weekend, three former Buckeyes will be competing for the trophy.
Ryan Dzingel and Max McCormick, who both skated for the Buckeyes from 2012-14, are with the Carolina Hurricanes. Dzingel, who got married in July during the NHL’s pause, played in 64 games for the Hurricanes during the 2019-20 regular season, with 29 points on eight goals and 21 assists. McCormick skated in 56 games for the Charlotte Checkers in 2019-20, Carolina’s AHL affiliate, and had a 16-19-35 line.
The Hurricanes will take on the New York Rangers in the qualifying round, a best-of-five series. Games are slated for noon Saturday and Monday and 8 p.m. Tuesday. If needed, game four will be Thursday and game five Saturday. The Hurricanes are in the NHL’s bubble in Toronto.
Matt Bartkowski, a Buckeye in 2008-09 and 2009-10, is with the Minnesota Wild in the bubble in Edmonton. Bartkowski saw action in 55 games for the AHL Iowa Wild, with 16 assists and 18 points. He was recalled by the NHL team during the season, but did not see game action.
The Wild will face Vancouver in the qualifying round. The best-of-five series starts at 10:30 ET Sunday, with game two Tuesday and game three Thursday. If needed, game four would be Friday, with game five Sunday.
The qualifying round winners will advance to best-of-7 series. The matchups will be determined by seeding, not by a set bracket.
