COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior linebacker Etienne Sabino, from North Miami Beach, Fla., and Dr. Krop High School, was named today to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, which honors the nation’s outstanding linebacker.
Sabino is the sixth different Buckeye to be named to a 2012 preseason watch list for a major college football award. Three of his teammates – senior defensive lineman John Simon, junior defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins and senior tight end Jake Stoneburner – are all on multiple watch lists, including the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list which was released Monday evening (July 16). The Lombardi Award honors the nation’s top lineman who plays no more than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball and linebackers.
Sabino, a family resource management major, is a fifth-year leader on the team who has played in 39 games and started five times. He was one of the team’s Top 5 tacklers in 2011 with 62 stops and a personal best of eight tackles three times: vs. Toledo, Miami and Michigan. He also had 6.5 tackles for loss (for minus 27 yards), including quarterback sacks vs. Akron and Toledo, respectively, and he was named Ohio State’s MVP in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl.
Butkus Award semifinalists will be named Oct. 22, finalists Nov. 20 and winners will be notified on or before Dec. 4.
Four rounds of voting will determine the winner of the 43rd Lombardi Award, which will be announced on national television (carrier TBD) the evening of Dec. 5 from the Hobby Center in Houston, Texas.
