COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five Buckeyes have been named to the Rivals.com Big Ten all-freshman team, the publication announced Wednesday. Offensive linemen Jack Mewhort and Andrew Norwell were named on the offensive side of the ball while defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins and defensive back Christian Bryant received defensive honors. Jaamal Berry was named the all-freshman kick returner.
Ohio State put more players on the all-freshman team than any other school in the Big Ten.
Mewhort, from Toledo, Ohio, played in nine games while Norwell, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, played in 10 games on an offensive line that has helped the Buckeyes rank 14th nationally in rushing offense with nearly 220 yards per game.
Hankins, from Dearborn Heights, Mich., played in all 12 games, recording 16 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss and Bryant, from Cleveland, Ohio, played in six games, mostly in the Buckeyes nickel package and on special teams, making 10 tackles before suffering an injury that cost him the rest of the regular season.
Berry, a native of Miami, Fla., averaged 25.4 yards per kick return and ran the ball 32 times for 267 yards, an average of 8.3 yards per carry, and a touchdown as a reserve tailback.
The sixth-ranked Buckeyes take on eighth-ranked Arkansas in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 4 in New Orleans, La.
