COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing its third-consecutive Top 25 opponent, the Ohio State men’s soccer team suffered its third-consecutive one-goal loss as the Buckeyes fell to No. 23 Boston University, 1-0, Friday at the Penn State Nike Classic in University Park, Pa. Ohio State falls to 1-3-1, while the Terriers remain undefeated at 4-0-1.
In the first meeting of these two programs, the Buckeyes outshot Boston 21-7, but were held without a goal, while the Terriers scored in the 30th minute on a rebound from a free kick.
“We didn’t yield many opportunities to them at all, but we just weren’t sharp,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “Our focus wasn’t where it needs to be. We need to get that focus back Sunday when we play a very good San Francisco team that beat Penn State here tonight, 2-0.”
The loss to Boston follows an 0-2-0 record at the Carolina Nike Classic last weekend when Ohio State fell to No. 5 North Carolina, 1-0, and to No. 16 Wake Forest, 3-2, in double-overtime.
The Terriers scored the game’s lone goal when BU’s Neil Hlavaty sent a free kick into the box, where Moshe Shalchon headed a shot that hit the post. Zach Kirby was there to collect the rebound and knock in what would be the game-winner.
On the header, OSU junior goalkeeper Casey Latchem (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) dove to potentially save the shot, but when it hit the post, Kirby’s shot was then at an open net at no fault to Latchem.
The Buckeyes outshot the Terriers 13-4 in the first half and had all eight of their shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
OSU freshman Doug Verhoff (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) had a team-high five shots, including three on goal. Junior Eric Brunner (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) and senior Taylor Korpieski (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) had four shots each.
Latchem had three saves.
Ohio State takes on San Francisco, ranked as high as No. 9 in the country, at noon Sunday. The Dons will enter the game 4-0-0 and have yet to allow a goal this season.
