COLUMBUS, Ohio – Keturah Lofton, a three-time All-American thrower at Ohio State, fell shy of an opportunity to add her fourth national honor Thursday at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Lofton finished 13th in the qualifying rounds of the women’s hammer throw. The Top 12 marks advanced to the finals of the event set for Saturday.
Lofton, a senior from Zanesville, took All-America honors in the hammer at the 2004 NCAA meet. She finished her Ohio State career with a toss of 193 feet, 9 inches Thursday, coming less than two feet short of the final qualifying slot. Lofton, who won Ohio State’s Big Ten Medal of Honor last week, was an All-American in the weight throw indoors in 2004 and ’06.
Events continue Friday at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium. No Buckeyes are scheduled to compete Friday. Brian Olinger, who posted the third-best preliminary time (8:39.33) in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Wednesday, will run for the individual national title at 5:20 p.m. EDT Saturday. CBS Sports will televise events Saturday live from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
